I have (2) 256 MB DDR2 Memory Sticks ,but my computer says i only have 447 memory. Before i had erased my hard-drive it said i had 512 but now it seems to have dropped. I used a program called FreeRamXP Pro to defrag my memory, which i used before i erased my hard-drive. Please assist me or ask me for more info if i am not clear enough.

But did upgrade my graphics card from a Geforce MX 4400 to a Geforce MX 5500. Could that be the reason for the change?

If your PC came with built-in graphics, that may explain the difference. Your Graphics processor may be using about 64MB for video RAM. The program that told you 447MB may only be reporting available memory. This is common and no cause for concern.

To verify the amount of physical RAM, install and run the free Belarc Advisor.

It's not Windows. Nor is it a formating issue - that is Hard Drive space, not RAM.

There is a few possible answers here.

1. It could be you MB is taking 64 MB for video memory, typically you can find this out in your MB BIOS.

2. (more likely) You are running ECC memory and 64 MB (2 small chips on the stick) have gone bad. ECC memory, because it uses a parody algorithm that is capable of continuing to run when you loose individual chips without crashing your system.
You can use a memory testing application to verify this, either one in your BIOS (if it has one) or a software applicaiton.

Its problem is it is running Windows.
Your computer is correct by saying 447 memory. You will never get the full 512 or the full 1 GB. It will always be less. That's why on the iPod, or HD, or computer you get it says *Formatted capacity is less*.

elfa does have a good idea, but there is a much simpler and time-efficient way of checking
go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, system information
thsi will tell you your OS, processor model, family, stepping, and speed, and, the most case-important, physical adn virtual memory (free and total)
i recommend using this, as its just easier

sounds like a system resource is hogging some of your free memory. cntr, alt, delte to system process and see what program is using the most memory, if you don't need or use it you can stop it from running.

See if you have a separate video card, it also used some of your ram for that. The 64mb might be going towards that.
