Most basic parts: Case with power supply, motherboard and compatible socket chip with Heat Sink. Memory that is compatible with chip and motherboard, Hard drive and an installable Operating System. A CD/DVD drive so you can install the operating system. That's pretty much the bare bones. Plus you'll need a keyboard and maybe a mouse.

Motherboard
Processor (CPU)
Memory (RAM)

to make a computer, thats all you need, however to make it useable you need to add:

Hard drive(s)
Graphics adapter (sometimes its built into the motherboard)
Sound card (sometimes build in again)
Some form of cooling for the CPU, either a heatsink and fan or water cooling.
A CD or DVD drive

Then other people like to add other things such as cool fans, lights, maybe an old floppy drive etc.

If you are asking this question, Id be leary about trying to build a machine from the ground up. Personally, I would suggest trying www.dell.com if you are looking for a normal machine or www.alienware.com if you are trying to build a powerful, gaming type of machine.
