I've been trying to defrag my computer but it won't ever finish. It just stays at 0% during the process. Am I doing something wrong? Here's how I start defragmentation:
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter
Are these the correct steps to do defrag on my computer? I have a Compaq Presario.

Depending on the size of the harddrive(s), you may need to let it sit for a long period of time while it analyzes the disks.

Also, make sure you have atleast a gig of freespace on the drive prior to starting. If you have too little space free on the drive, the defrag will take forever, as it moves the parts and pieces to a contiguous data segment to defrag it, and then moves on to the next file to do the same thing.

If you have a lot of running processes in the background then it can take forever for the Windows defrag program to work...Personally I won't use it because it's just not very good in that it just puts stuff where ever theres and empty space.
I use PerfectDisk 8...this program puts everything exactly where it needs to go to make Windows run as fast as it can.
You can try doing it this way instead to use the Windows defrag programming.
Click Control Panel, then Performance & Maintenance , Then Rearrange Items on your hard disk to make programs run faster.

As dmc177 mentioned, I think it helps a lot if you have more free space. If it is your first time or it has been a long time since you last defrag, it will take long long time. It also helps a lot if you use 'ccleaner' to clean up your computer(no intention to spam, just to help you from my experience) and remove programs that you never use. Media files like music and video files also take up a lot of space. You can save such files to flash drives or save as CDs. My friend took a few hours when he defraged for the first time.

i usually run disk cleanup, then scandisk, which checks for errors on the drive, and then i defrag
also, to run efficiently, you need (i think) at least 12% of your drive free
if you have a huge hard drive or you havent done it in more than about 3-4 months, it could just take a long time
