My computer is an AMD Athlon 750MHz with 640MB of PC133 RAM.
Is the RAM going to be of any use if I upgrade my motherboard and processor ?
If so what is the fastest processor I could upgrade to ?

A lot depends on the motherboard. A lot of systems were made using the highest supported speed at the time they were built. Chances are really high that you will have to change both motherboard and processor to get faster.

PC133 was used up into the 1.5ghz range if I remember correctly. You can probably still find some 1.2-1.5 AMD motherboards. Particularly on the used market.

Be aware that computers in this speed range are being sold for around 100.00 so it might be cheaper just to get a complete used computer.

Newer systems are in the 2.4 - 4 gig speed range and will take different ram to work properly.

The fastest AMD processor you can use with PC133 memory is 1.4Ghz.

Depending on what kind of processor that AMD is, you might just be able to replace your current processor with the 1.4GHZ and still use the same motherboard.

But, and this is a big "BUT", you most likely have the slot A version of the Athlon processor. These processors only went up to 1.0Ghz.

What you are going to want to do is find out what motherboard you have installed on the computer. You can usually find the model number printed on the motherboard in big letters and numbers. Once you find that, you can then google the model # and find out what processors it supports.

Athlon 750MHZ is a Slot A processor right? The fastest Slot A CPU ever made is a 1GHz Athlon Thunderbird... If you can find it you'll save a lot of money! heres another tip, upgrade your cooling system. AMD processors are much faster than intel processors, especially if you could maintain a low CPU temperature.

You need to look at the spec for the motherboard. My Abit board would support Athlon (or Duron) 700 MHz to 1000 MHz which use FSB speed of 100 MHz. Memory bus could be either 100 or 133 MHz for PC100 or PC133 RAM.

Your EDO RAMs are not going be compatible with any new motherboards. They use either DDR or DDR2 these days. I doubt if you want to put the boat out for the fastest retailing CPU which is very expensive, the Intel quad-core Extreme QX6700. Something like a dual-core AMD 5200 (2.2GHz) dual-core should satisfy most speed-freaks.

You would be better off building a new computer from scratch.

Keep your old one as a backup and install one of the free LINUX OS'.

My favourite is UBUNTU.

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.
