Desktops - November 2006

Yesterday, all-of-a-sudden all the icons got larger, and the cursor got larger, and i cant fix it. I recently downloaded a bunch of demos. Maybe that has somthin 2 do with it. I know a-lot about cps, but obviously not enough.

When I open "View System Ingormation" in my pc, I have seen that

Intel(R)
Pentium 4, 1.66GHz
1.67GHz, 184 MB of RAM

But The RAM size is 256 MB.
My ques. is why does it show 184MB ?

a error message saying presss F1 to try reboot or F2 for set up. If i press F1 i get the same message again. Is this hard drive ready for the trash? it's on a dell optiplex Gx1. before that i was getting a blue screen which came and went so fast i can't read what it says. what are my options? can i retrive any information from this disk? if so how? a big thank you to any one who can clue me in. who ever knows what to do and is correct gets best answer. It was running XP pro.

i would like to buy a computer that is for basic use. the problem is that i don't know my computers that well so i came to yahoo answers to look for answers. i would like a cheap but not to cheap, in the range of $ 400- $800. i don't care about brand names, all i can about is that itsd workable. When I turn on my computer it just stays at the very first screen. Its the initial startup screen thats blue and has the HP logo on it and at the bottom it says Esc - setup, F1- boot menu, etc. It just stays there and doesnt continue booting to Windows or anything. Also the keyboard doesnt seem to work because I've been trying to get it into safe mode or the boot menu and its not responding. HP told me the motherboard might be out. Any other ideas?

On the desktop when I go to properties/settings the max resolution I can choose is 1280X1024. How can I increase this?

According to the specifications of my X300 Radeon card I can set the resolution higher then this but it wont let me on the desktop.

Is there any other way to do it?

Every so often, for absolutely no reason that I can discern, my computer says that I have no cd drive, eventually like 3 months later it comes back briefly. The computer is a Dell, about three or four years old. I hadn't used it in a while. When first bought had boot-up password. Now it won't accept the password and boot-up. Says wrong password...very frustrated

I have an HP Pavilion a450y running XP service pack 2. Every time I try to shut the computer down, restart it, or put it to sleep, it freezes on the very last screen. It's a blue screen that says "Windows is shutting down".

The only way I can get it to do anything after that is to hold the power button down and then do a hard restart. It used to do this only occassionally. Now it does it every time.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or repair this? Someone suggested BIOS, but I updated that to no avail. Any other tricks, or good programs for helping me troubleshoot it?

I am considering buying a pair of opteron cpus. I am looking that the 246 HE models and they look good considering that i have a very limited buget and that i am upgrading from amd xp 2100 cpu. I will be getting a new mainboard also.

The viruses affect my pc in annoying ways eg refuses to shut down. Instead of sending it to computer shop to reformat the hard disc, I want to know how to do it on my own. The computer takes 2-3 hours to do the work. Why does it take so long?
