Go to your DOS prompt (in Accessories) and type in FORMAT C:\
This will erase everything. A verification message will ask if you really want to do this, and perhaps even a second asking is possible. If you format your hard drive, it will erase it all. Forever. Just be sure to Backup all you think is important!

Is this a re-installation of XP? if so, just boot from the disk and follow the instructions, and press 'r' to repair when advised. If this is an older machine say Windows 98 or a clean copy of XP then: Enter BIOS and make sure the CD Rom drive is the first boot device Boot from the CD when prompted. Allow the setup to 'run through' the files There should be a license agreement here, which you have to press F8 to agree and to continue with the installation. Now you will reach a setup screen (it will scan for versions of windows already installed between these 2 points.) In the setup screen, you have 3 options. Install windows (Re-install may be there depending on the integrity of the installation, and the version of windows) Delete Partition And Quit If The partition is deleted, then it needs to be re-formatted, choose your file format carefully, if its win98 then FAT32 is the way to go, if its Vista or XP then i advise NTFS. after all of this, just sit back and wait, and follow the instructions when provided =] Good Luck

Interesting question. There are people that can get information from your hardrive. There are industries that specialise in data recovery Remember the military use PCs so they want to get stuff back if they raid the enemys place.
But I remember seeing on TV some geeky kids were getting old PCs and hard drives out of a skip at the back of an IT business.
I think it has to magnetised or burned with a laser if u wanna be a paranoid guy. Then people will not steal any information like bank details or important stuff.
So. remember, its hard to COMPLETELY remove your information ;)

Step 1.
Make a new map, name it 'rubbish' and fill it with anything. Fill it that far that you get the message full disc.
Step2
Make 1% of your hard disk free again by deleting some files from rubbish'
Step 3.
Defragment your hard disk
Step 4
Shred or erase 'rubbish' but do not delete it.
Step 5
Defragment your hard disk again.
Now your hard disk is practically clean.

http://www.sys-shield.com - AbsoluteShield File Shredder
This is a freeware ustility that will completely overwrite your hard drive 35 times with a certain pattern of data that will completely obliterate all the info.
Use with care!
Formatting your hard drive does NOT erase the date, it can still be recovered. Neither does System Restore.
http://heidi.ie/eraser - Eraser file shredder
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
There you go Fred Bear, have a thumbs up.

I use a shredder, that is FREE in http://pclinuxos.com that boots in the CDrom. Just go to the INSTALL icon, click, and let it partition the drive, then, it will be cleared.
Also, can use QTParted, over at http://livecdlist.com all FREE...!!!
If the cops are at the door, you needto fully rewrite, reformat the drive at lest 7 times to prevent recovery, as they can't afford the tools and resourses the CIA have, that can recover up to 14 layers deep...

You can reformat the hard drive and install all the software afresh. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
