I have an HP Pavilion a450y running XP service pack 2. Every time I try to shut the computer down, restart it, or put it to sleep, it freezes on the very last screen. It's a blue screen that says "Windows is shutting down".

The only way I can get it to do anything after that is to hold the power button down and then do a hard restart. It used to do this only occassionally. Now it does it every time.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or repair this? Someone suggested BIOS, but I updated that to no avail. Any other tricks, or good programs for helping me troubleshoot it?

you could limit the services that start on boot up, either in administrative tools from the control panel or go to start run, type msconfig, and go to startup uncheck unecessary programs for startup when booting. Run a defrag on your disk, you can compress to save some space. You can also upgrade your memory, run a check for virus or spyware and remove.

Go to the HP Support and Drivers site and see if there are updated Drivers for your computer. I have a Compaq and found several Driver updates and a new BIOS program for my computer. Most of the problem I had went away after doing the updates. Be very careful when updating the BIOS. You do not want the power to fail while it is installing.

I'm not sure if you got it, or if you built it. It sounds like you have a defective component. The top two suspects are the motherboard and the power supply. I've seen this type of problem due to the "capacitor plague" problem, but that doesn't apply to new machines -- the capacitors need to have aged before causing this type of problem. One suggestion: cover the ends of unused power supply connectors.

Sounds like you have a bug. Scan for viruses. There could be other issues, as well. Do you download games and such off the Internet? If so, uninstall them. Also, uninstall any screensavers you have downloaded (they are the worst for causing problems).

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
