The computer is a Dell, about three or four years old. I hadn't used it in a while. When first bought had boot-up password. Now it won't accept the password and boot-up. Says wrong password...very frustrated

Thanks guys. I have taken out the battery when this first happened. That didn't work.
I checked on the internet and it spoke of a pin to take out and put back in. I spent hours on my knees looking for this part(there was a diagram), but couldn't find it.
Need to know more about the whereabouts of this pin. Where exactly is it located? Not a computer expert. Need details on where to look...simple, break it down for me.

For the record...by boot-up password I meant that a password was put on so nobody else could use my computer(turn it on).

Now let me address the other password - not the BIOS password - but the windows password. If this is what you mean by "boot up password", there are ways to clear out the administrator password. Search the net for "knoppix std" and learn all you can. You can really screw up a system if you dont do the right things.

If you are XP home edition, keep taping the F8 key after the power on self test, but before you see the windows logo. Start the computer in safe mode with "administrator" as the user id. You can then go to the users/groups control panel and reset all the passwords.

Shut down your computer, unplug the power cord, take the case off and remove the "button" battery on the motherboard, which sustains the CMOS memory (where the basic settings are stored). Be very careful to ground everything, including yourself, to avoid static damage.

Leave the battery out for a few minutes, then put it back in (this may be a good time to replace it with a new one, just in case)..and the BIOS settings would have been restored to factory defaults. You should now be able to use the original boot password.

Unfamiliar history ? No password ? Everything showing in a different way ? Could be an epidemic that began up as quickly as she became the laptop again on. Check for brand new consumer debts and quarantine any malicious documents instantly.

Pull the CMOS battery out. And then put it back in. It will be located on the motherboard, it will look sort of like a watch battery but a little bigger and round.

In addition to above, there may be a switch or button on the motherboard to reset the settings (inlcuding the power-on password).

RTFM-- read the flippin manual-- 8-)
