Before we get THAT far, why aren't you using antivirus or staying away from these places that give you viruses and spyware?
It's like smoking and wondering why you have cancer all of the sudden.

At this point the simplest and first troubleshooting answer is to download a free LiveCDrom that you simply boot with in the CD.
It will spin up the system, report all hardware malfunctions, and open up a wonderful desktop, with 1900 free games and programs.
That will mean the trouble is NOT with your hardware, but, with your software and Operating System! At that time, you may open the hard drive by clicking on the hard drive icon, and save the personal files over to a external USB stick, or external drive, or even to a CD or DVD in a burner.
Then, you will have rescued your files, and you can do a complete install of what ever system you desire, and to install this Linux, you click on the INSTALL icon!
It will bring up a program to install and to wipe your hard drive clean of all the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions"!
Lots of advice and guidance are there in the docs, on the screen, at the website, and the forums... most folks don't need them, and the kids won't bother with them!
Microsoft runs all their 45,000 computers for Microsoft.com, MSN.com, and Hotmail.com, and the Redmond Corporate Campus, and the Systems Labs, and the Firewalls, and the routers, on Linux.
Linux is virus proof, upto 50X faster, and is FREE! The shareholders are thrilled! So are the other Fortune 1,000 Corporations, because Linux runs over 78% of the Internet, most major Universities and colleges, and 165 nations governments!
So easy that my Third Graders do the download, burning to CD, and the rebooting, so we can run much faster, on the old school systems! Yes, it can run in the CD like a game or music CD, or it can be put on the Hard Drive, for faster action!

if you want to format your hard disk and reinstall your operating system then just boot up with your OS cd. you should choose the option to install (winxp, macos, linux) on the drive that's affecting you. It will have an option to reformat. Reformat. Presto, wait a good half hour, and you're back to normal.

When the computer freezes during shutdown it is most commonly caused by out of date Video Drivers. Go to your Computer and/or Video Card manufacturer web site and download the newest Non-Beta drivers.

Deadliest?, i'm unsure What you propose. The quickest to Kill, in all probability some "Ebola ssp.", the type of Deaths, in all probability some "Orthomyxovirus ssp." (especially, Inf. A), BTW, Malaria is brought about by capacity of a Parasite, no longer a virulent disease.

you should have said what virus it is. so all we can do is give you general help now.
★★ SECURITY SOFTWARE & TIPS ★★
◙ The very best virus scanners are free. Mcafee & Norton Antivirus are mostly hype and won't do as good as the free ones. -- About.com & Smart Computing Magazine
◙ Download and install AVG. Use it first and see if it finds any viruses or trojans.
◙ After running AVG go here and run this virus scanner online. There is no need to install it on your computer.
◙ Microsoft's New Live Safety Center. Download this scanner to check and remove spyware, viruses, get rid of obsolete files and junk off your computer, and improve your PCs performance.
◙ The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. You can run this tool online FREE.

◙ Best spyware remover is Ad Aware. Download and install the free version.

◙ When malware (adware, back doors, cookies, dialers, hijackers, key loggers, spyware, thiefware, trojan horses, viruses, worms, and zombie pcs) or other undesirable software are installed into your computer they sometimes leave Uninstall entries in your Add or Remove Programs control panel. For some applications, you can remove the software using this Uninstall method. Other times they are there just to appear legitimate and only provide a hint that you are infected. This list contains entries left behind by undesirable programs in your Add or Remove Programs control panel. This information will allow you to determine if an entry in your Add or Remove Programs list should be uninstalled.

◙ Startup programs are programs that are automatically started by Windows when the operating system starts. The problem is that many programs, adware, back doors, cookies, dialers, hijackers, key loggers, spyware, thiefware, trojan horses, viruses, worms, and zombie pcs set themselves to start automatically when Windows starts. As more and more programs are started automatically, your computer's valuable resources are drained, thus making your computer start to operate slow. This database will allow you to search for programs that you find starting automatically on your computer and determine if they are considered to be malware (harmful), unnecessary to run, or necessary to run. To examine your computer for programs that are automatically started by Windows, you can download and install Autoruns by Sysinternals. You can then search for entries found in the programs output using this database to determine if the program should be running. If from the information you decide they are not necessary to run, you can uncheck that entry in the Autoruns program and it will no longer start.

◙ Before downloading email attachments in Gmail and Yahoo Mail click on the link that says, "Scan With Norton Antivirus".
◙ Before downloading any software from the internet type it into http://groups.google.com/ to see if that title is known for spyware or viruses. Google Groups has over 1 billion posts spanning 25 years to help you. Even after checking it there ALWAYS scan it before opening it. You just can't be too careful. -- Smart Computing Magazine
◙ A lot of the download sites like http://www.download.com/ and http://www.tucows.com/ scan software before releasing it to the public. But just for safety sake you should still scan it yourself.
◙ If you have a broadband modem or network router the firewall in these is not as effective as a software firewall. The firewall that comes with Windows XP isn't very good either. Download ZoneAlarm and your system will be a lot safer. Zonealarm is a two-way firewall. This means it guards your internet ports and also keeps spyware from reporting back to it's owner. -- Smart Computing Magazine

★★ TOOLS FOR SPECIFIC VIRUSES & TIPS ★★
◙ Sometimes you'll get a particularly nasty virus that cannot be removed with conventional tools. For times like these you can (quite often not always) download a removal tool for that specific virus. Below are some sites you should look at.
