Win XP?

There could be many reasons that your system will not load quickly. My first inclination is that you have a lot of programs trying to load during the startup process. At the bottom of your screen (in most cases), you have certain programs that load during startup. The way you stop this is by clicking on start, select Run, type msconfig, click on the startup tab, and uncheck the boxes of any programs that you do not need. Quick Time can sometimes take a while to load. Instant Messengers can too. After you have done so, click on OK at the bottom to close the box. Restart your computer and see if that helps.

Another culprit is defragmented files. First click on Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. You can clean up files that are unnecessary. Then, when that is done, click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragment. It may take a while to complete.

Make sure you have an anti-virus program installed and an anti-spyware program. Scan for viruses and spyware. Many times, viruses can cause your computer to run slowly.

With only 256MB of RAM you need to stop all unnecessary programs from running at startup. Having programs running that are not being used allow them to run in the background using much of your RAM.

Go to Start>Run>type: msconfig>click OK>click Startup tab>uncheck any programs you do not want to run from startup>click Apply>Close>Restart> in box that appears check the little box and the OK.

This program is free and will keep your RAM cleaned of clutter. This will do a lot to help with speed.

the only way is to add more RAM
prebuilt computers cannot overclock
and that is the only other way
so probably make your RAM about 1gb to 2gb
instead of 256
1gb only if you don't game

It would take hours to completely answer such a question...
Start out by:
-cleaning out viruses, spyware
-deleting\uninstalling uneeded programs
-run defragmenter
-disable background, themes, and use a blank screensaver
-upgrade to 512MB RAM

The bigest think I did with my P-III 450 was to go from XP sp2 to W2k sp4, and increase from 256mb to 768mb. More stable, more secure and lighten fast.
