Newly released computers/electronic equipment normally is outdated in 3-6 months. This is how fast the technology advances. Everything gets faster and smaller(more compact). This is maily due to competing companies. For example, if you buy a an Intel P4 3.0 ghz, in about a month AMD would be releasing a faster model and the loop continues. The same is true with peripherals. If the computer processors is upgraded, it follows that the cards attached to it must also be upgraded to maximize the processor and eliminate incompatibilities thereby maximizing performance results.

Having said all that, you need not go to the store to get the latest equipment all the time. As long as the one you have serves it purpose or help you get things done, why upgrade. Hold your horses as long as you can before rushing to buy a new one. There are also a lot of things out there that you won't need so get only things that you really need. Unless of course you got deep pockets.
