On the desktop when I go to properties/settings the max resolution I can choose is 1280X1024. How can I increase this?

According to the specifications of my X300 Radeon card I can set the resolution higher then this but it wont let me on the desktop.

Is there any other way to do it?

Your monitor doesn't support a higher resolution than that. You need to get a monitor that supports the resolution you want. Windows will lock out modes that your monitor can't display even if your video card is capable.

I am not 100% sure about this but it is worth a shot:
1) right click on the desktop wallpaper and choose properties. click on the tab "settings", in the display section you should see a list of graphics card. choose the graphic card desired and you should be able to adjust your resolution.

2) depends on your monitor max resolution

Unless your monitor supports higher resolutions you can't...at the least shouldn't because you can permanently damage the monitor!!!
And Yes there's a way, but I'm not helping you to destroy your monitor!!!
