I sick of the blue screens , lock ups and other problems . I have firewall's, anti virus , and Windows Me . I do not like windows xp . I have tried redhat , and totally trashed one computer that I loaded it on . so what is the better system ?

I am about to be a college student living in a dorm, and space consolidation and organization are massive pluses. I have, therefore, wondered about the possibility of putting certain papers I need to keep handy on my computer tower via refrigerator magnets. I also have a magnetized organizer that is something like 18"x12" (just a rough estimate); would that cause problems?
I've heard that magnets will fry a harddrive, but I've also heard that you need a *strong* magnet to do so. Help is appreciated!

lately whenever i turn on my dell xps, all the fans will whirl at maximum speed, as if my pc is about to take off to outer space. i always end up unplugging the computer for fear of damaging the fans.

on the few occassions that it succesfully reboot, the pc gives me the following error message "pci express operating in X1 mode - press F1 to continue or F2 to setup"

is something wrong with the fans / thermostats?

FYI, my graphic card is Nvidia GE force 6800 GTO

I have a Radeon 9550 256mb AGP video card. Recently my drivers got f'ked up and I tried reinstalling my video card drivers (catalyst software) and it fails saying I need standard VGA drivers first. Well I want to repair the install but can't because the disc isn't working. I can't find a download on the net (doesn't exist), Microsoft and ATI refuse to acknowledge the problem.

SOO.. my last two options are find an older version of catalyst, say v 4.11 ? (which is becoming hard to do) OR try and steal the drivers from another Windows install (which hasn't worked yet).

I think i deleted a share file.Now my d drive and e dr. are missing.device manager is showing they are their but has black exclamation point and says code 41 I cannot use a cd in either drive anyone know what to do?

What is the p8 connector in ATX motherboard that is coming from power supply for? Its 3 pin female connector with only two wires that plugs in the motherboard. Is it soft switch or something else? Thanks

im looking to buy a new computer and im thinking about buying a Intel Pentium D 3.2 Dual processor, but i see many athlons out there, i would like to know the equivilant of intel to athlon. right now i am running on a 2.54 pentium 4. i also want to know what difference does CPU make. when my computer runs multiple programs it laggs, do i fix this with RAM or CPU?

Okay so my friend has asked me to look at his computer. The computer is coming on and everything, but absolutely nothing is coming up on the screen. I tried switching out monitors, but that didn't work, so I am assuming it is the video card. I have basically two questions, first is there any way I can be sure it is the video card BEFORE I have him go buy a new one, and second, if it isn't the video card does anyway have any other ideas as to what the problem might be.

I'm looking into putting together a new system, and the board I'm looking at using has 4xSATA II 3gb plugs and 2 IDE ATA133 channels. Is it possible to use both of these setups at the same time, or will the BIOS only take one type at a time?

Today I turned on my 20" iMac G5 and I saw smoke coming out of the computer. The fan came on very loud like a jet. Then the screen was flashing and I smelled something that was like burning rubber coming from the computer. I am now concerned that if I turn on this iMac again and leave it alone it will catch my house on fire. Has anyone heard of problems like this one.

its an ibm personal computer 300 GL. has pentium 2 400mhz, 128mb of ram and 6.4 gb hard disc, with 80 gb external hard disk.
should i buy:
ram (what type?)
or processor (will every type work with this motherboard or not?)
