Hi.
First off, Windows ME is a Microsoft failure: arguably, the least stable OS Microsoft ever released, so unfortunately, you've experienced the short end of the stick for Windows OS's.
Meanwhile, purportedly Microsoft's MOST stable release was Windows 2000. When XP came out, a lot of businesses and schools with the 2000 OS saw no need to upgrade.
I'm not gonna get involved with the "Apple Vs. PC" game. Instead, I see your experience is PC and while not impossible, it tends to be quite frustrating for PC users to adjust to Apple computers due to the various differences. Example: the mouse on an Apple doesn't have a right-click button or a scroll wheel. It's not "missing"; just not how Apple operates. In it's defense, you load cd/dvd on a Mac computer and BOOM, the icon appears on the desktop; Mac users will likely tell you that it's somewhat disconcerting to load a disk on a Windows computer and have to 'find' it.
Not better, not worse...but different enough to be an obstacle. And even Mac proselytizers here would have to admit Mac technology is costlier: I can buy any (new) $9 microphone and record to my PC with it, but Mac's proprietary mics START at like $30+.
So I'd vote 2000. However, the major drawback of that OS is that as the years go by, less and less applications and hardware will be backwards compatible with it. Will (for example) the HDVD's be compatible with 2000? Hard to say.
Finally, Linux was the best thing since sliced bread for a while before it became commercialized: even if there's TONS of free software applications, hardware configurations are another deal and you either have the choice of paying hundreds of dollars for the retail OS or downloading/installing a freebie that comes with no tech support. Eww.

Hey there...
While the pros and cons listed above are mostly right, I use both PC's and Macs. I absolutely love my Macs...But I'm not willing to give up my games and expensive software that I purchased for my PC's (some of which are not available for Macs).
Your biggest problem at this point is Windows ME. It is the worst edition of Windows ever produced and, unless you want to continue with Blue Screens, crashing, incompatibility with your hardware/software and the fact that ME is no longer supported by Microsoft (as of June 6, 2006), I would suggest upgrading. Since you don't seem to like Windows XP, why not look at Windows 2000 Professional? It looks identical to Windows 98SE/Windows ME and is an extremely stable system. Most anything you can use with Windows XP will also work with Windows 2000 Professional.
Your other option is to go to Mac. System stability with Macs are second to none. Ease-of-use is fantastic. Yes, they are a little more expensive and yes, some programs are hard to find for them...But the trade-offs for that is a system that will probably not crash for 10-15 years, a system that doesn't require you to search for hours (or days) for drivers for new hardware, a system that (when new equipment is added to it) will just continue working smoothly and easily. Macs are the BMW/Mercedes-Benz of computers. They "Just Work" and last forever. I have two Macs here at my house that are from 1994-1995 and run as well as they did they day they were purchased. I still use them. They are also considerably faster than their PC counterparts. My 450MHz Blue & White G3 Mac runs faster than my 933MHz Pentium 3 machine with the same amount of RAM (a backup system of mine).
So which way should you go? Depends on your budget and what you are looking for out of your system. If you want rock-solid stability and have some extra money to spend and want a computer that will last you longer than you are likely to use it, then go buy a Mac. If you don't have the budget for a Mac, or want to continue dealing with all the driver headaches or you plan on upgrading your machine every 2-3 years (at the longest), then upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional on your current machine (make sure you are running at least 256MB of RAM for Windows 2000 Professional). The decision is completely up to you.
Happy Computing!

I've tried to use a mac once about two years, was way too complicated for me and I'm pretty good with computers. Never used windows Me, but I know I haven't heard anything good about. I use windows xp, I like it. As far as blue screens goes, most of them can be easily fixed, if you take the time to learn about them. Otherwise windows vista is coming out.

MAC is definitely more stable than windows but windows applications are more easily available (at cheap prices too).
If you only use the desktop for websurfing then try using "Mandriva Linux" which is a lot more user friendly than redhat/fedora linux.
Stability wise Linux is the best Operating system but doesn't have that many powerful user applications like photoshop etc.

Are you just surfing and sending email? Maybe writing a MS Word document every once in a while? Have lots of pics on your digital camera? Got an Ipod, maybe? All of these tasks are handled better on a Mac, and you can get a decent used iBook or iMac very cheap these days... well worth it!
(fyi - I own 3 macs and 2 pcs)

I would say Mac unless you do very PC-specific things. Mac is excellent for most users from casual web surfers and emailers, to geeks building open source code.
PS: I am a long time PC user considering switching.

It depends what is your scope or purpose for using a computer, if it is related to printing and publishing works its better to go for a MAC, because it is best for high resolution and high quality images.
If it is for other purpose a PC will do....
