if you can't restart your computer i see only one chance to save the pictures. don't do anything with the hard drive (formatting would delete all data on it). take the hard drive out of the computer and get a new one (costs you about $50). build the new hard disk in and setup the OS again. if your computer is running again then you can build in the old one as slave disk and you will have probably access to your pictures.
a suggestion for a new hard drive

Don't know what you mean by saying the computer says "Compressed". Unless, perhaps it means there is a compressed file on a disk it is attempting to read such as your A: Drive (Floopy disk)

I would suggest you check and REMOVE ALL disks from your floppy drive as well as ALL your CD-DVD drives.

*IF* it still will not boot up....

Try to start your computer again and WATCH the Screen for which KEY to press to go into BIOS Setup. Make sure all your drives are shown and I'd suggest you set your C: Drive as the 1st Bootup drive at this time to see if your computer will start then.

*IF* it still will not start I fear your hard drive is bad or the boot sector of your C drive is bad or has been corrupted by a virus.

Worse case scenario, you can most likely save your pictures, as well as most of the other files on your drive by changing the pins on your C drive to make it a slave and buy a new drive for your C drive and reinstall\restore your computer

Just reinstall the Windows OS, but select to delete the windows folder - not reformat the Hard Disk Drive.

Set your PC BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive. Insert the install disk and reboot.

If it can't start up how did you get to ask this question? OK - you used a friend's computer.
