lately whenever i turn on my dell xps, all the fans will whirl at maximum speed, as if my pc is about to take off to outer space. i always end up unplugging the computer for fear of damaging the fans.

on the few occassions that it succesfully reboot, the pc gives me the following error message "pci express operating in X1 mode - press F1 to continue or F2 to setup"

is something wrong with the fans / thermostats?

FYI, my graphic card is Nvidia GE force 6800 GTO

ues pci express runs in 16x mode and should be set to the correct setting in bios. You may want to check the card and make sure there are no jumpers to set on it as there are two speeds to pci express now. Also some thermal sensors will cause the fans to rev if it detects too much heat in the box or near the cpu. so make sure that is seated properly as well

It is ok if the fans spin fast, just making sure, but you didn't change the clock speed, did you? because if you did, that could be a reason, plus, new computers now, have more than 1 fan, so that could be it also. and when you get the F1 F2 thing, it means windows didn't boot properly, hopefully you will not get this again, because it is kinda bad thing. Hope this helps a little bit.

pci express should run in x16 mode - that is what's wrong. check for graphics card settings (either a jumper on the card itself or a parameter in the BIOS).
if you can't find any, contact the Dell help service.

did you install the correct graphics card driver? you can check this in the Device Manager / Graphics Card / Tab Driver / Driver Details

did you add anything new to you xps? will it even power on. the fans act like a leaf blower right? and the light in front is amber in color?
