Hey, can someone tell me, if I have a motherboard with a Pentium 4 2.4GHz 478 socket configuration, can I use another Pentium 4 with 1.8GHz 478 socket configuration? Will my PC work after I fully assembled it?

XP Pro o/s with Intel® Pentium® 4, 3.0GHz with H.T (1MB cache), 915 GV chipset, 800MHz FSB, 256MB DDR RAM, 80GB 7200RPM S-ATA HDD, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900.

I want to upgrade the RAM from 256 MB (PC 3200) to 1 GB, please suggest the best configurations possible, with existing 256 MB RAM.

256 MB x 4
256 MB x 2 + 512 MB

512 MB x 2 (in this case my 256 MB RAM will get wasted)

Thanking you all in advance !

Given the change from a very loud to a moderate noise which of the two fans (power supply or cpu) is more likely to be the source of the noise?

Any ideas about why the noise would be so much louder one day than the next? Loud noise began shortly after I turned computer on, so its not about amount of use. Today the computer has been on for 8 hours and there is a relatively low high pitched vibration.

Can both fans produce the high pitched noise? I have an inner ear disease that makes that sound intolerable.

Dont want to replace cpu fan if power supply fan is at fault. How do I diagnose which fan is responsible? Could it be both? Does power supply fan problem mean replacing power supply unit?

Who makes a good quiet cpu fan at a good price? Does Zalman make good fans? Is endpcnoise.com trustworthy?

All recommendations for a quiet fan and where to buy it appreciated. Do vibration dampener kits work? How much will silicone grease help to fix the problem?

I know very little about computers. Heard on a radio show Windows me (mine) and 98 (my friend's)were in trouble, no more support , and that millions of us were now going to be sitting ducks for hackers. You would think Microsoft would care about their customers. What do those of us do, are there updates or do we have to buy new computers? I paid alot for this one. Thanks.

I have an old iMac (from the late nineties/early 00's), and I've recently thought about getting it up and running again. It's in pretty decent shape, but missing a it''s mouse and keyboard (lost in one of my moves). Basically, I'm asking if it's worth it to get it going again. Do you think it is?
