I have an old iMac (from the late nineties/early 00's), and I've recently thought about getting it up and running again. It's in pretty decent shape, but missing a it''s mouse and keyboard (lost in one of my moves). Basically, I'm asking if it's worth it to get it going again. Do you think it is?

It certainly wouldn't be my main machine, as I have a very nice HP notebook, so it would be more of a "play" computer.

yes its only missing a mouse and keyboard. it shouldn't cost you any more than 30-40 dollars. Any parts that are broken probably need repair, if thats the case its not worth it. But since its an old model, ask your local apple retailer about if the new keyboars and mouses will work on this old model you have.

Hi --

It depends what you want to do, for email and web browsing it's probably worth doing. If it's got a DVD drive, you can install OSX Tiger on it and you can be in pretty good shape. Otherwise you can use Panther or OS9.

IMacs have USB ports, so all you need to do is buy a USB keyboard and mouse: you don't need the apple ones, they're standard parts.

I fix iMacs. If it is a tray loading iMac, 233mhz to 333Mhz, with CD, and you can afford the SODIMM RAM memory to get up to 256 Mb then, you could even load and run OS X. I do prefer 9.2.1 on them, though.

If it is a slot loader, 300Mhz to 400 Mhz, with DVD, it takes PC100 SDRAM and you can stick in two 128Mb or 256 Mb ramsticks and it would scream!

Macs run about 8X faster than anything of a similar cpu speed in a PC running Microsoft. Also true of all Linux, BSD/MAC OSX OSes.

Both iMac systems can run with most any USB keyboard and mouse.

iMacs are going for $40 and up on eBay, with the Mac keyboard and mouse included. I fix systems, and set up needy children and folks, with PCs running Linux/BSD, and Macs that are donated to me!

If everything else works and all you need is a mouse and a keyboard, yes go for it.
Any expensive repairs or parts though and you're better off getting a new mac.
