XP Pro o/s with Intel® Pentium® 4, 3.0GHz with H.T (1MB cache), 915 GV chipset, 800MHz FSB, 256MB DDR RAM, 80GB 7200RPM S-ATA HDD, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900.

I want to upgrade the RAM from 256 MB (PC 3200) to 1 GB, please suggest the best configurations possible, with existing 256 MB RAM.

256 MB x 4
256 MB x 2 + 512 MB

512 MB x 2 (in this case my 256 MB RAM will get wasted)

Thanking you all in advance !

A board with those specs will probably handle more than 1 gig. I wouldn't stop there. Visit www.crucial.com to see what you can get. I would max the board out. Yes that would mean probably putting the 256 away for now but it might find a use later :-)

It won't make any real difference which memory configuration you use, so you can just choose the one that costs less. You are correct to want to add memory, that will help the performance.
If you are going to play games or do other graphics-intensive programs, it would be a good idea to get a decent graphics accelerator board (AGP slot), say one with at least 128MB onboard memory.

i'd say two 512mb ram chips. The DDR is only taken advantage of if you install in pairs. For instance, i used to have one pc3200 512mb chip. I would run Half-Life 2 for a while, and when i quit, my computer was so sluggish i had to reboot. Now, with another identical ram chip, i can run HL2, quit, and windows will still run smooth as butter. Plus, you can get two 512mb pc3200 ram chips for under $100 at tigerdirect: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=586829

Buy a 1 GB card for the price of 2x512MB cards and your computer will run cooler

1GB X 2

Trust me, they're coming out with 2GB sticks already, 256 is soon to be extinct.

2GB is a fair amount to be running current programs.

if you have four slots (and will NOT be upgrading) use 256x4.

if you will be upgrading later, go for one of the other configs.
