I'm using a pair of 40Gb IDE's as C&D on a D865GBF M/b as well as 2 120Gb SATA HD's (as a RAID 0 array) - works fine for me.

You can, but there are caveats. First, you need to have a case with enough empty bays for six hard drives. You also need a power supply that can handle the load as well as plenty of cooling fans, since all those drives will generate a lot of heat. Those are your main problems. If you do have room in the case and adequate cooling, you can connect 4 SATA drives to the plugs on the motherboard. To use the IDE drives you'll need an IDE controller card. Most computer stores carry them for about $20. It's a PCI card that you plug into the motherboard, and most have plugs for two IDE drives. You may have to buy your own ribbon cables though.

But like I said, heat and power and space will be your major limitations. You might be better off putting some of the drives in an external enclosure.

i imagine you want assisting cables on the motherboard to connect a SATA problematic disk. even if it isn't already there, you could attempt searching a SATA card. Alternately , in case your workstation has usb port, you could purchase an exterior usb casing for the SATA hd, and would connect it as an exernal hd.

if the motherboard has 1 ide header, then your are limited to 2 ide drive
each sata drive takes 1 sata connector, they do not chain master / slave like ide do.

Yes you can.

Edit: but why? SATA's a better technology. Use that instead of IDE.
