I use a Mac at work, and we are unable to upgrade or switch to PC or better Macs due to budget freeze. But our budget is not the only thing frozen. My mouse cursor freezes -- regularly. My keyboard works faithfully, but occassionally a prompt comes up saying it has insufficient power. The mouse is the big problem, as it flashes red (it's a USB wire mouse, not wireless) after extended use of the mouse. The pointer freezes when moving around a lot or when I'm scrolling through a page. I have plenty of memory left and 900 mb of virtual memory. I deleted all Web browser cookies. I emptied my trash. A virus search revealed nothing. A little help? (Please refrain from anti-Mac comments -- I'm doing the best with what I got, and Macintosh has its good points).

Its never had sound from new(just last month) so I contacted the makers (Medion) and they kindly sent out a new XP disc and an 'applications & support' disc. However, when I went to the FAQs to sort the problem, it said...."

go to Start, Control Panel, sytem, hardware, device manager. In device manager there will be a yellow question mark next to Multimedia Audio Controller" (then follows on how to correct the problem)

I dont have a listing there for 'multimedia audio controller'!!!

I've sent them an e-mail, but was hoping someone couldadvise me how to get it sorted ASAP rather than wait for them to get back?

Currently the HD has 2 partitians. The first is probably 90% of the HD and the second is large enough to install XP with a bit left to spare. To be honest, Im uncertain how I got 2 partitians to begin with. This puter has worked hard for a couple years and has too many issues to resolve. I believe my best approach would be to COMPLETELY reformat the hard drive ( I dont want to restore it to an earlier point etc--I want the HD wiped clean for a fresh start) and then reinstall a fresh copy of XP. I cant seem to figure out how to reformat the hard drive.

Can anyone tell me a reasonably simple way to reformat it?

well after looking at the dell computer I planned on I looked at the HP compaq presario.

Which is better:
Compaq 1839 here:

OR the Dell Dimension 5150c
with options of
processor = Intel® Viiv™ technology -Intel® Pentium® D 820 Dual Core(2.80GHz,800MHz,2x1MB)
memory = 1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz (2x512) Memory

Occasionally, about once every month or two, my computer will say that I have only 992MB of RAM, when usually it shows my full 1024MB. It will say this during POST, and also after I boot and look at the properties for My Computer. In addition, I have noticed that when this happens, I tend to have problems with my video card. Basically, my computer will say that I don't HAVE a video card. It has done this with both my NVidia FX5700, and with my ATI Radeon 9800SE. I'm sure it is no coincidence that it is exactly 32MB. 32MB is the amount per chip. I am using 2 sticks, consisting of 2 banks of 256MB per stick. Has anyone heard of this happening, or experienced it? And if so, is there a fix? It doesn't make sense to me for RAM to work SOME of the time. A chip is either bad, or it isn't.

I have 3 choices for memory:

512MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz (2x256) Memory [Included in Price]

1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz (2x512) Memory [add £58.75]

2048MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz (4x512) Memory [add £152.75]

is the one included with price likely to be ok for home use? or should I pay the extra for one up - is it much better or wouldn't I notice for my purposes?

I think this is more for people running big programs?

And for the hard drive:
currently mine is old & only 16GB so the 250GB option is likely to be more than enough for me - not worth upgrading?
Options:

500GB (7200rpm) NCQ SATA Hard Drive [add £188.00]

250GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst cache [Included in Price]

320GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 2MB DataBurstTM cache [add £70.50]

Thanks - ps ameteur here - use simple language, thanks!!

since i can customise my dell computer...

I can drop the price by £153 if I don't want the 3yr at home service. I would opt for this - I never ever needed help with my current computer so is it really worth the £153?? Surely any big problems would occur after 3yrs anyway?

Advice?
