A number of things can take up hard drive space.

1) Temp folder - temp files from local and internet applications
2) Temporary Internet Files - pictures, videos, cookies of your internet browsing history gets stored here (can empty by going to Control Panel -> Internet Settings -> Delete files under temporary internet files)
3) Virtual memory - OS will use your hard drive for memory space
4) System Restore - takes snapshots of your system which takes up space.

These are the most likely causes assuming you didn't do any downloading or installing and no-one else is using your computer.

ya, check your restore points, make sure they're not taking up 2 much space. Also run disk cleanup in system tools on your start menu. Another program you might want is spy-bot. they give a warning about incompatibilities, but I've never had a problem. with those 3, you should find some free space.

Windows system restore can take large amount of space, each time you run adware remove programs can trigger XP to take a new snapshot, also if you are short on memory, the swapfile can also grow a bit too.

Temporary Files and System Restore use a lot of memory, so try Disk Cleanup to clear some of it up.
