Its never had sound from new(just last month) so I contacted the makers (Medion) and they kindly sent out a new XP disc and an 'applications & support' disc. However, when I went to the FAQs to sort the problem, it said...."

go to Start, Control Panel, sytem, hardware, device manager. In device manager there will be a yellow question mark next to Multimedia Audio Controller" (then follows on how to correct the problem)

I dont have a listing there for 'multimedia audio controller'!!!

I've sent them an e-mail, but was hoping someone couldadvise me how to get it sorted ASAP rather than wait for them to get back?

bad sound card, maybe bad sound drivers, bad speakers, volume not turned on or up. You may be going deaf...

Look for the megaphone icon on your toolbar near the clock, double click and check that nothing has the Mute box ticked.
Then left click and check that the volume is up.
Check that the external speakers are plugged in and switched on, if you use them.
You could try Start - Control Panel - Sounds and Audio and have a rummage round there. Theres a troubleshooting section somewhere in that lot, and speaker tests.

The yellow question mark means the driver has not been installed. In the Support disc, you should be able to navigate and find the driver for your sound card. Just install the driver and you should have sound again.

Go back to the device manager and you should see something called sounds, video and game controllers. Click on the + sign and you should see your sound card configuration. If its a ? mark then you need to click on that question mark and install the driver for it. You need to choose the option to use a CD or disk. Install it from the CD that they sent to you and reinstall it.

Just load ur sound card driver software that has come with ur motherboard package. If u have purchased sound card separately use the cd to load the sound card driver from the CD that is there with the package.Still if it doesn't work check sound settings.Check speaker knobs if muted or if power supply of speaker is working properly or not.

Have you tried restarting your computer? I've had the same problem twice with a Medion, and a restart always helped.
