Hardware - March 2007

One week ago I opened my laptop, turned it on and nothing happened. Screen is black and none of the keys work. The power supply seems to work as the yellow battery light is lit continuously as well as the blue power and internet lights. The computer has not been dropped or anything spilled on it. I thought it might be "asleep", but the function Zzz buttons won't work for me either. The only thing that I can hear is the fan. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My aunt needs me to reformat her hard drive but she doesn't have a recovery cd, she told me that a tech gave her directions once on how to reinstall windows directly from the hard drive. I know I've done this once on my own computer but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it, any help will be appreciated.

I got ahold of a Windows 98 SE cd that's for Dell only. I have an HP computer. On the very first screen it says "this cd is for Dell computers only" and the program quits. How does it know that I don't have a Dell? Is there a way to trick it into thinking that it is a Dell?

Ok, i am an extreme gamer here and i am building a Custom Exstreme Gaming Computer, but i am not sure what king of Sound Card i should get? i mean i am defiently looking for The Best or A Very Good Sound Card Here!!! i have Surround Sound Speakers for my computer (2 Front, 2 Rear, Center, & Subwoofer) so it needs to be an 8-Channel or whatever...What would you recommend? Ok, i am building a Extreme Gaming Computer here...and i am looking for some help on what kind of Video Card i should get...i am not sure. Now i defentily want to stay with NVidida but i have heard that the New 8800 GTX is the way to go! but i have also heard that running 2 x 7800's is Equal or better than running the one single 8800 GTX! i broke my computer i used to game on, so my friend let me borrow an old laptop, which was really choppy... so i bought another one just to have for the moment... the game i play on thier is world of warcraft. the computer i bought has a pentium IV 3.0 processor, 1GB of RAM, 250 GB of Hard Disk Space, and a Intel Graphics Media Accelerato 950... the game plays just fine then the screen blinks black and comes back to the game... when i minimize the window, i get a message that says "your display driver was not responding and has recovered"

i dont understand why the game doesnt work if it has everything better than the laptop.

should i reinstall the game, please help
any suggestions...?

Since I use the printer just for printing out letters or spread sheets, I see no need for a color cartridge. So, I seems logical that only a black cartridge would work ok. But, knowing how companies try to limit options to make more money, I am not sure whether I need the color cartridge for the printer's operation or not. I have been buying the color cartridges as a matter of course only to have them dry up. I think that everyone will acknowledge that replacement cartridges are way too pricey. In fact, I can BUY a new printer for what mine cost to replace. Advice would be appreciated. TKS

I have tried to find reviews for the Lexar Sport 2GB but have not come across any more than six. Of the six, two have stated that the 2GB Lexar Sport is a lot slower than the 1GB model, that Lexar did not make improvements to the speed to make up for the increase in size. Does anyone happen to know if this is true??
