F12 is the Save As key, when you want to save a file. Same thing as going to File, then Save As. When you are in a Microsoft Word document, or similar to that, Ctrl+S can be considered Save As, even though those keys mean Save. When you already have a file saved, but you press F12 to "Save As," you will create another file. To save a file, press Ctrl+S.

the function keys (f1-f12) are used by applications and hardware devices to act as hot keys to do many different things.
when windows is running normally just hitting f12 does nothing.
in some applications f12 will open the save as box to save your current document.
If you hit f12 during startup it often sends you to diagnostic utilities set up by your system manufacturer.
on my computer it is used to reinstall the OS from the diagnostic partition on the hard drive.

F12 doesn't do anything in Windows, unless you program it to. However, different programs may have keyboard shortcuts that use F12.

It's the teleportation key. Think of where you want to go and hold it down for 1 minute for every mile you plan to travel. It doesn't really work for trips under 120 miles
