Since I use the printer just for printing out letters or spread sheets, I see no need for a color cartridge. So, I seems logical that only a black cartridge would work ok. But, knowing how companies try to limit options to make more money, I am not sure whether I need the color cartridge for the printer's operation or not. I have been buying the color cartridges as a matter of course only to have them dry up. I think that everyone will acknowledge that replacement cartridges are way too pricey. In fact, I can BUY a new printer for what mine cost to replace. Advice would be appreciated. TKS

You can use only the black ink. Clikc file, print, preferences, color, choose black ink only.

I just leave the empty color cartridge in. I also got my husband a nice but pricey printer. It was well worth it in the long run he has now had the printer for 2 years and the cartridges only cost about 12.00 and he only needs about 2-3 a year. It's best to shop around. I don't buy cheap printers any more because I was so tired of them lasting 6 months.

no you don't need the color cartridge unless you really have to. i agree with you. i'm in school, so most of the time i use my printer to print off papers for class. i've had my printer for the last 3 years, and i've probably changed to black cartridge 4-5 times but i've never changed the color cartridge (although it still works fine). plus, it saves money. color cartridges are like $5 more than the black cartridges.

I know, isn't it self-defeating biz-wise, to be able to purchase a new printer for less than the d**n cartridges?
Anyway, make sure to follow that printers instructions for inserting their cartridges. Some require that you turn the printer off before printing with a new cartridge, others want you to print a test sheet to align the machine and cartridge properly. (yadda, yadda, yadda)

You would have to go into your printer's options under Properties to see if the printer will even operate without a color cartridge. Most won't.

Unfortunatly some printers won't work without both cartridges, I have a HP that I ordered a color cartridge 2 months ago and they are very slow to get it to me. Meanwhile It sits useless to me. Its a shame that we have to buy a new printer when it runs out of ink to save money.

You didn't say what your printer is, some will and some wont. Try taking your colour cartridge out and se what happens. If it refuses to print just leave your old colour cartridge in place when it runs out.
