Do as everyone else sais, run your scanners to check for spyware/virus... if you computer keeps shutting down and you can't run them, you might be out of memory or your virtual memory is low.

This is a difficult question to answer without seeing for oneself but it may well be that it’s clogged up with temp files, cookies or other broken feeds.

So your first plan of action would be to clear these and then see what happens.

The next plan would be to do a defag

Followed by a full hard drive scan for spy ware, virus or other nasties.

If the above fails to highlight the problem then perhaps you need to do a full reload of your system disc?

But this is a last resort as it needs to be planned in advance.

How can I do all this?

Open your control panel and right click Internet Options
Press the general tab
Then press DELETE
Then press DELETE ALL
Then press OK
This will remove a lot of clutter

Then Defrag

Go to START-ALL PROGRAMMES-ACCESSORIES-SYSTEM TOOLS- DISC DEFRAGMENTER

And follow the instructions which are quite simple to follow

Then down load something like Windows Defender (which is free) and run a full (not a quick) scan.

As for re-installing windows, well leave that for the time being and see how the first two work.

Most probably have too many programs running all at once .

You may also be bogged down with spyware and even the odd virus.

Download Spybot Search And Destroy from

downloads.com

Install it update it and run full scan (may take some time)

once scan is finished put ticks in all the box's and choose to fix.

if you have no virus protection download AVG Free from

www.grisoft.com

Install update and run complete scan.

other uSE full software include ad-aware se (free version)

and avg anti spyware (1 month trial)

Please note that if your system is heavily infected it may take a good few scans and cleans to even get any result. In some cases more professional help may be needed as registry entries may need cleaning.

Try running all the scans from safe mode its more reliable.

To get into safe mode press f8 key as windows is loading and choose safe mode.

Hope this helps

my first guess would be defective or overclocked memory.

try to access the BIOS and set the DRAM timing to 'safe' or if that option is missing, the slowest possible timing.

if that does not work, try to replace the memory chip.( yes i realize that it is not easy to borrow a replacement from someone :) but you can always bring the memory chip to a computer shop for testing, which is simple and shouldnt be too expensive.

if it is not a hardware problem after all, i strongly suggest you don't bother with registry cleanup and harddrive defragmentation and the like, but take it as a sign from the binary powers, that it is time to start over and do a complete reinstall. it is almost certainly the quicker option and positively the cleanest.

Could be a whole host of reasons, do a thorough virus check, run spyware checkers, and get a good registry cleaner to flush out entries from old software that you've removed.

Check your fans also, if one's failed you could be overheating, that could cause your machine to lock up as well.

click start, then accessories, then pc tools. Click disk clean up, clean the drive you require, then press ok , and ok again for the clean to begin. Then, when complete, analyse and defragment your files.
