I go to the network connections folder and all I see is a Local Area Network icon, no wireless connection icon. Help! I have installed the driver to my adpater as well already. I'm totally lost.

If not, then does changing any of the Addresses- such as the Subnet mask, etc. make a difference?

I started my first IT job Tues as a TSS and I am really lost, I am in my 2nd year of college and even though I have had several IT classes I still am lost. They ask me during my interview if I had ever worked with active directory or servers and I told them no and they still hired me and have been training me on it little by little for the last few days, and I am right now just following another TSS around like they told me to so I can learn the ropes.

But I feel like I will never remember all the passwords or which server is for what, also I feel like I'm just standing there at times and not really helping them much because I don't really know what to do. They keep sayti

Are all of these just common fears of a new job and am I just trying to get into to big of a hurry by trying to learn to much to fast. The boss said I am doing good and to just keep doing what I am doing and when I feel comfortable I can just jump right in, but I really think that I am not impressing them much.

I need to find out some very basic things about networking, as quickly as I can. As far as I know I'm dealing with a "peer to peer network," which includes seven computers and a printer. With a cable Internet connection. Can you help me define the terms above and tell me what each one of them does in the network? 10 points for the easiest to understand, clearest answer. I'd really like to know where to go to learn more without too much techie doubletalk.

I need a fast wireless router for home use that will also allow two computers to print from the same printer. The Apple Airport extreme router does what I need, but at a price. The Apple one works because there is a USB port at the back which allows printers to be plugged in. Both computers then printe from this. It needs to be compatible with both Mac and PC! Thanks :)

Here's my setup:

Compaq PC in the basement with an ethernet card and a USB wireless adapter that connects to the internet through our Linksys WCG200 wireless cable gateway.

HP PC in the living room with an ethernet card and a USB wireless adapter that also connects to the internet through the gateway.

Both running Windows XP Home SP2.

I bought a CAT5e (which should be backwards-compatible with regular CAT5, correct?) crossover cable to network the HP and the Compaq together to share files, but I can't get them to see each other. The HP HAS TO stay connected to the internet through the wireless adapter - there's no other way. I'm willing to give up the wireless connection to the Compaq in the basement if it means I have to share the HP's internet connection with the Compaq over the ethernet cable. My question is, how do I configure the two computers so they see each other with the crossover cable? If there are any internet resources, could you point me to them?

My new notebook should be here any day and my current modem has no wireless capability and only one Ethernet jack which my PC is plugged into. Could I just pick up a new one from the store, or should I call the phone company? I tried a different one time when a friend of mine got rid of their DSL (I have DSL too...) and it wouldn't work...

Any suggestions..?

Hubby is staying in a Motel that offers free wireless connections, but his Toshiba satellite laptop, asks for the linksys password when he tries to connect. What does he need to do, to connect, will our router password have anything to do with his ability to connect there? I need it simple to pass along to him, as he's even less computer savy than I am.Thank You, all help greatly appreciated.
