Well there are several ways internet is delivered.
1.There is "Naked" DSL, uses a line without a phone number attached. Usually the cheapest option.

There is CABLE internet - comes in with cable service. Slightly more usually than DSL

There is Satellite internet - uses satellite just like TV more expensive but covers nearly anywhere. Has issues

There is 3G service - uses cellular phone cards in your computers and connects you wirelessly to your cell carrier.
Covers in most areas where cell service is available also more expensive

There is Wifi/WiMax service which uses Wifi technology and brings internet to your home from a "Wireless ISP" Good technology as long as there is an Access Point that you can reach.

All depends on where you live as to what is available!
Check http://broadbandreports.com to see what carriers are in your location and check prices with them.

The box is called a filter and is supposed to filter the modem line to not interfere with the phone line, but when you are online with dial up your phone wont work. There are many cheap broadband suppliers, I use Orange have used it since it was wanadoo it is £14.99 a month and have never had a problem with it. But I have been thinking of going over to Somerfield as they do cheap and good wireless. Don't go over to sky, Talk Talk or Bulldog as I have heard they are not too good. Might be an idea for you to learn a little about computers as it will make your life easier and cheaper using one, the link below has some information which is useful. Hope this helps Andy

Yes you can get internet connection without a phone line. AT&

Both Vodafone & 3 do 3G network over the mobile network as long as you live in an area that's covered by the 3G networks. Download speeds wont be as good as over a land line or cable though.

If you have cable TV, you can get a cable modem. You can also buy a special connector to use your cell phone as a modem, but that's tricky to setup and probably much more expensive, not to mention slow. If you want DSL or regular dial-up, you'll have to get a land line.
