I am a complete beginner to this.
We have a pc at home with pipex broadband that is connected to a bt landline.
I am looking to buy a laptop as i work on the internet and this stops my family using the pc as i am always on it!

Here goes:

I want to get a laptop with a wirless card enabled and get my own wireless broadband, not network with the pc with the pipex
via a router etc....
I know this sounds stupid but picture the scene ,
I have my laptop, my router and the cd's sent for wireless broadband. Do you need to connect to a landline in any way (I know this sounds stupid , but everytime i look for wireless on google, it mentions bt landline which is already being used by the pc with pipex)
I thought that was the whole point of being wireless!!

I want to know if there are any affordable residential gateways or similar devices that would serve as a bandwidth assignment/filtering device. Blocking websites and IP ranges is a plus. I've got a 2Wire 2700HG DSL modem.

My brother keeps accessing high-bandwidth sites and downloading what not from the Internet and I had just more than enough. Anytime I want to get some work done (I'm a web developer) I need to ask his bum **** to stop whatever he's doing online so I can upload my stuff or else my clients will get back at me. And I'm tired of shelling the bucks while he just sits there enjoying the service I pay for.

I am the administrator at a small law firm. We have a large collection of forms and articles my bosses would like to be able to easily navigate through. I have created an HTML page on our network with several daughter pages that categorizes and organizes these documents, but I'd really like to add a search. Unfortunately, all the tools I see on the Internet to do this require me to upload these thousands of files somewhere. Is there something I can use to get the search box on this local page without having these files online? I would prefer to have a script type thing I can plug into my existing code so the box shows up like Google, not an extra utility my bosses must install and use separately. I'd also like to be able to configure the parameters and the way the results look. Any ideas?

I have Verizon FIOS as my Internet provider. My Internet speed is really slow and sometimes doesn't work at all. I called to let them know, and they told me that since my upload numbers were so low, it was probably the router. They suggested I bypass the router and plug directly into the computer and they would send me a new router.

Now things are working perfectly, and my connection is faster than ever. My question is, do I need this stupid router? I have no other computers hooked up to the system, and I don't have FIOS TV service. What's the point of the router if there's nothing else going on in the house? Thanks for the advice!

Room mate will not pay fair share of internet access so I changed the password and cut him off. I see he is back online by using an unsecured signal from someone in the neighborhood. Can anything be done about that? No I don't know who has the unsecured wireless.

In detail what are the features operations and revelantant standards of ISDN.I have some information allready like

Integrated Services Digital Network is a set of digital transmission protocols defined by CCITT. The protocols are accepted by virtually all the world’s communications carriers as standard.
o It builds on groups of standard transmission channels. Bearer channels (or B channels) transmit user information at relatively high speeds, while separate Data channels (or D channels) carry call set-up, signaling and other information.

Two types of ISDN channels. B channels are clear channel "pipes" for user voice and data.
D channels are packet-switched links for call set-up and user data.

o It handles all types of information. Unlike some other digital communications technologies, ISDN handles all types of information - voice, data, studio-quality sound, still and moving images. They are all digitized, and transmitted at high speeds in the same flow of data.

I would like to know if it is possible to use the FRITZ!Box (http://www.fritzbox.eu) in the US. I'm originally from Germany and always used it over there. I have very positive experiences, so I want to use it in the US too. I know that the DSL standards in the US are different, but I heard that some analog FRITZ!Box models might work in the US. I want to use the box with the provider AT&T.

Has anyone any experiences he or she can share with me? Which FRITZ!Box models work without any problems with AT&T DSL?

Please don't tell me to ask the producer of the box - AVM - or AT&T. AVM gave me some technical details, but they couldn't tell me if the box would work in the US. AT&T had no qualified person to answer my question if their DSL network follows the ITU-T G.992.1 Annex B standard. Meanwhile I found out by myself that it doesn't, because it is an analog network.

Please focus your answers on which FRITZ!Box models work and/or what your own experiences are.

Thank you for your help!

I have a Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO Router (F5D9230-4 ).

My pc is connected to it via ethernet, while another laptop inside the house is connected wirelessly.

I need to control the bandwidth the laptop uses, without installing any software in THAT computer (like netlimiter).

Is there a way to accomplish that?

I am using the Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

I have a 5meg connection with Charter and the speed results are as followed with a WIRED connection through the router:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/208641671.png

However, whenever I use the wireless router I get much much slower speeds. The signal is 100% (says excellent) and this PC is 5 FEET away from the router yet the speeds are awful, as seen here:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/208642161.png

I have tried changing channels, tweaking the router security etc. but nothing seems to help. Is it just a crappy router or what? Like I said, the signal is 100% and It is still slow. My PS3 is in another room and has about 50-60% signal and gets around the same speed, How can I fix this?
