Most routers that you get at your local store are going to be pretty similar. Basically, all you need to do is insert the CD and follow the directions. If you do something wrong, just start over. You can't hurt anything if you make a mistake. Try to get a good sales person to help you at the store. Know what operating system you are running and, if you can, how much memory and processor speed. You can get all of this information by right clicking on "My Computer" and clicking on Properties. Just write down everything on that page and take it with you and you'll be fine.

A router "routes" traffic from multiple computer or devices on a segment (computers that all share a common IP range eg. 192.168.128.x where x =1-254) a router can connect this range to another segment (computer that all share a common IP range that is different from the first range). a router can also connect to the Internet (which basically is the same as another segment since the Internet will have an IP that is different from the original segment.

is there a best.... depends on what you want to do. If you are a home user, look at getting one that has a built in firewall, content filter and virus protection (Juniper $500-$900) If you dont want to spend that kind of money look at NetGear or Lynksys.

There are only three basic types of routers. WIFI, hard wired, and those that do both. Today, most do both.

They work by connecting to your modem and then sending that signal to any and all computers that are connected to the router. They also facilitate the installation of a network that will allow all computers on the network to talk to each other.

To answer your question as to which is best. Since they all do the same job, they are all pretty much the same.
