I just had to reformat my computer. It took me forever to get it fixed and get back online. Now, I am on line at times and then it disconnects. What could I check to see what is making this happen

Are you using a router? If so, are you connected directly to the router with a cable or are you wireless? Powercycle the router by unplugging the electrical cord from it and waiting 15 seconds. Plug it back in and check that you have a connection. If you are not running a router, check to make sure that the ethernet adapter in the computer has updated drivers through the device manager. Finally check your cable connection. The cable itself could be bad.

For starters, Install and run both an anti-virus and anti-spyware program to make sure your problem is not either of those things.
For anti-virus, either buy a commercial version such as McAfee, or use the freeware version from AVG. You can search on Yahoo for the link.
For anti-spyware, use Spybot:Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Install and run both. Run the virus scan from both normal mode, and from Safe Mode (Hit F8 at boot and select Safe Mode.)
This will make sure the problem is not that so many spyware or virus programs are trying to access the internet that you are overloading the connection.
The other thing to check is the link from your IP provider to the Modem. That has to be checked by them, but only takes seconds, once you manage to get through to them.

Can you ping the router or connect to it's setup page? (for my Netgear; the address is 192.168.1.1). If you can reach the router but not the interweb, then the problem's with the internet connection. Try connecting to the router using a cable. If you can connect wired but not wireless, then the problem's with the ISP or possible the router. Swap out the router & try again.

I had this problem one time and I was able to fix it simply by rebooting my modem. Based on the information you've given us, the problem could be on your computer, interference with your wireless connection, a problem with your modem, or a problem with your phone/cable line.

Are you using wireless or are you connecting it directly? Either way, check you rmodem, restart it, and check to make sure it works. You want to eliminate as many possibilities as you can.

are you on a wireless network?? if that is the case.... you might have other connections on your preferred list that is interrupting your current connection.... take those off and you should be fine.
