I have been using a Dlink wireless router with a separate modem, but have chosen to purchase a new wireless Router/Modem. Am i able to use the D-Link DI 524 as a wireless access point to extend the wireless area? if so how?

Well, There are actually more than one way. All depends on the firmware in both routers.

1. The best method, if both units support "WDS" which is wireless distribution. Just set up both units for WDS and let them connect. This makes the end user see either unit as ONE router and extends the network. Since WDS is sometimes only compatible with other units of the same manufacturer it may not work.

2. Setup a entire separate network. Since routers route you can setup two units on two different IP ranges and have two complete separate networks.
To do this you have to run ethernet from unit 1 to the unit 2's WAN port and set unit two as a static IP on the first network in the WAN settings. Then set the LAN side to an entirely different LAN range. (If the first lan uses 192.168.1.1 make the "Second" router use say 192.168.2.1 or even 192.168.10.1 etc) You may have to set the IP of the second router as a DMZ in the first routers "application" or forwarding section. Some just work without that some don't all depends on the routing of the first routers system.

3. Use a cheat system. This one is the "least desireable"
Connect the first routers lan to a LAN port on the second router. Set the second router to disable the DHCP settings and to a different SSID and channel from the first. Be sure to NOT have the two routers with the same IP address. If the first router is at 192.168.0.1 then set the second one on 192.168.0.2 (dont let it have a DHCP address from the first period be sure the second ones LAN DHCP is off)

4. Set the router to an AP in the settings pages. (Some routers allow this setting when setting the "mode" some do not so all depends if the router allows that.

Thats all the ways that I know you can do this. One should work for you.

Merry Christmas and God Bless.

(So dont let anyone tell you you can't do this.. I have three routers all running different LANS all lans are separated, all run to one central router for internet.. all work.)
