Hubby is staying in a Motel that offers free wireless connections, but his Toshiba satellite laptop, asks for the linksys password when he tries to connect. What does he need to do, to connect, will our router password have anything to do with his ability to connect there? I need it simple to pass along to him, as he's even less computer savy than I am.Thank You, all help greatly appreciated.

That is the problem of LEAVING the default SSID on your router. Linksys is the DEFAULT name for all LINKSYS Wireless. You really do want to change it to something specific for you! Otherwise you will see what you are seeing now. Even the Hotel seems to be guilty of leaving the default, or because it is the "preferred" name he is finding another nearby linksys instead of the Hotels system. Have him "view available networks" to verify he should be connecting to the linksys name. -- My guess is that is the wrong network!

He will need to get the key from the Front Desk. Once he enters it he will connect. Then when he gets home he will have to re-enter the key for your home system to connect to it.

If it were me, I would change the SSID on my home system, so that when I connect somewhere else, it doesn't mess with my home Wireless system and my keys are "preserved" so I don't have to re-enter them! You can do this from the wireless page on the Linksys. Just login to the router, go to the wireless page and change the SSID setting. Use your name, you dogs name, your address, etc so that it becomes unique to YOUR system and not to everyone else's.

Hope that helps, Merry Christmas and God Bless

Sounds like the hotel has some type of wireless security enabled (WEP or WPA). Honestly, I would recommend contacting the hotels front desk to see if they can provide the key. This doesn't have anything to do with your router password at home though. He might also want to try right-clicking on the Wireless Networking COnnection icon by the clock and see if there are any other available networks. Other than that, your best bet is to contact the hotel front desk. Hope this helps. ;)

have him check the front desk. sometimes they have instructions on how to connect. at least at days inn they did.

the wireless adapter should have a utility in the system tray by the clock. Double click on it, and it should tell you which wireless networks are available. Pick the motel's network and connect to it.
