I have comcast internet and have a desk top running on it without a problem. I am trying to use the same connection to access the internet via a NETGEAR fast ethernet switch (model fs605 v2 to be exact).

When I plug my LAN cable in recognizes it, searches for the IP address and than the yellow exclamation point pops up and says limited or no connectivity. When I go to repair the connection it cannot renew the IP address.

My TCP/IP properties are set to obtain IP address auto.
Obtain DNS server auto.
DHCP enabled
The advanced TCP/IP settings mirror my desk top which everything is at its default state.

I disabled the firewall on my desk top and lap top and still no dice. I also uninstalled my NIC from the device manager and than reinstalled it from actions menu and scanned for network changes. It reinstalled successfully and still the same thing.

I tried the cable on my desk top and it worked fine.

Is there anyone who can help.. also I am using XP on both machines.

I currenty bought a Linksys wireless-N broadband router....and im trying to connect it to a friends computer. There both laptops and were located in a 3-story standard barracks that the army provides. With that router we are unable to connect to eachother which is a total guess distance of 300-400ft "located from across the end of the hall to the other." Is there any other way or any router that might be able to cover that area? Remember we are in a building with a lot of concrete and steel. If there are any ideas can anyone please help to increase the distance for me to pick up the wireless routher....thanks.

i'd like to use only windows xp components. I haven't added many since the original install but i still have my disk so i can add all nessessary windows components.
which do i have to install?
can you please try to explain how to configure this so that I can share files from different locations.
you can be as techie as you want with your answers. I'm pretty sure i'll be able to follow.
my main pc is behind a linksys router but i've already fowarded port 21 for ftp, and made my pc have a static ip address in my dhcp client table. I may be mistaken about the acronym used there. dhcp i think is what i mean. dynamic something protocol i think. and my pc is working fine, has full access to the internet and I can still access it with my laptop. only I'm using a web client to access it and it's expensive for the non-trial version

My home has cable internet through a cable modem located on the ground level. I live in the basement, and it is inconvenient to run wires to the router if i want to hook or unhook something to the internet. I have a cable wire however, that could be plugged into a television. If i were to buy a cable modem, would i be able to use it on that cable wire in my basement?

I have two laptops and I want to share files between them.
One laptop is wireless enabled but the other one can not be connected wirelessly.
I have one wireless router (Netgear 64bit Wireless G router). One of my laptop is connected to wireless router directly with Ethernet cable and the other one is connected wirelessly.

Please tell me how can I transfer files between these two laptops? Please dont suggest to connect them directly.
Consider the existing setup only and tell me if it is possible by changing few settings.

Thanks.
Pankaj

I have tried different computers and different routers, but with each configuration, the same computer never works with port forwarding. Other computers on the network handle the forwarded ports without issue.

I am pretty sure it is an issue with Win XP Pro, but I am not sure where to look. I have disabled Windows Firewall, so that shouldn't be the problem. Any ideas?

i currently have a D-Link wireless router connected to my home computer.
I recently got a HP laptop and got it wireless ready. I went on my laptop and searched for wireless networks i found mine when i tried to connect to it, it asked for my WEP/WPA key. So i typed that in and clicked connect. I connected me the the router but showed that a had little or no connection and i could not even connect to the internet. When i try to connect i am within five feet of the router. so the problem is not that i am too far away either!!!!

I have tried so many different settings and i am now thoughroughly confused!
I don't know what to do next ?
all I want is to be able to use my wireless router to connect to the internet on my laptop
