contact the router manufacturer they have a free telephone 24/7 support line, and will walk you though the setup, you did not say what make it is.

tried and tested
D-Link is a good support line
Linksys is a good support line

Make sure that you have the proper cables, when using a router and modem, all the cables have to be straight through cables, the easiest way to check these is to take the ends of the cables and have the clip facing up. Check the colours of the wires running inside, if they are identical, (for example both having colours left to right exactly the same eg. green->blue->brown->yellow) then they are straight through, anything else is crossover, which will not work with what you are trying to do.

Also make sure the cables are inserted into the right ports.
The modem should be in the internet port which is usually isolated from the rest, the other ports are for the compters, LAN 1, 2, 3 and 4 (could be more or less, depends on router).

***SETTING UP WITH CABLE***

Unplug all the wires from the modem and router. Turn off computers.
Begin
Plug in the Coaxial cable into the modem, and into the wall socket.
Connect the Ethernet cable into the modem and INTERNET port on your router.
Connect Ethernet cable into the first LAN port of your router and the Ethernet port on your computer's Network card.
Repeat with the other computer, but this time plugging into the 2nd LAN port.
Plug in the power to the modem and wait for all the lights to turn on, make sure they are solid (not flashing)
Plug in the power to the router and make sure all the lights are on.
Turn on the computers and test the internet.
It should work.

Hope this helps
