Computer Networking - December 2006

[Selected]: All categories Computers & Internet Computer Networking

I formatted my 2nd computer and did a fresh install of Win98SE.

I've reinstalled all drivers (best versions) and all works well except internet connection. IPCONFIG shows ip address 0.0.0.0 and it will not renew; no error message, just no change.

NIC is OVISLINK Fast Ethernet Adapter v1.1 and I have the most current driver for it. Device manager shows adapter installed correctly. ControlPanel->Networking shows adapter bound to TCP/IP, acquire everything auto, looks OK.

I can't think what else can be wrong. Any ideas what I'm missing here?

I'm not interested in suggestions to upgrade, this secondary computer is for kids and I will not be upgrading to a newer version. Constructive ideas within 98SE please :)

I follow all the steps of plugging in cords which is the easy part but when I get to the first password, I don't know what to put there, I have tried the login password and many others. My router is almost brand new, I have tried installing it on a couple different computers and I have had it for about 8 months. I have had 2 professional computer people try to set it up but they were unable to get the computer plugged in to get internet. I don't know what password they used and I can't find out. please help me. This is a version 5 Linksys product. i can't update the firmware either. it can't detect it when I plug it in.

My wife and I have just installed a new BELKIN "G" router, it works perfectly with our desktop (which is a wired cable internet connection) but the problem lies with connecting to the WIFI signal.

We have secured our WIFI network with the proper passwords and I have enabled a "GUEST USER PASSWORD" so my wife can use her laptop through the same router (because I'm always online we want to be able to use two computers at once so we can both have Internet access at the same time).

My question is HOW DO YOU CONNECT TO OUR OWN SECURED WIFI CONNECTION? My wife puts in the proper passwords but the connection is still encrypted. Are we missing something?

Please walk me through this step by step...I will reward with 10 points for the correct answer!

I have been an user of Linux for the past three years. Now, I am looking at taking the RHCT/RHCE certifications. I went thru the Redhat FAQ on this, and looks like they are positioning this exam as a "guru" exam. Is it realistic for a person with no sysadmin background to aim for this one? I have plenty of time to prepare with my laptop, but is real world work experience necessary before taking up these exams?

Thanks!!

Whenever I try to connect my router, I have to hard reset my dsl modem. Then access my modem to do an internal reset, after that I connect my router its fine. But the next day, when I try to connect I have to do the same thing again. Sometimes, that doesnt even do it. I called my isp and they said my direct connection is perfect. So I've come to the conclusion its my router, what can i do? I was thinking of getting a d-link or netgear router instead.

Internet Explorer is not working on my wife's laptop. I click on the IE icon and the page starts to open up to her starting page but the bottom 80% of the page is blank. I'm not able to make anything work by clicking on it. I can't even close the window by clicking on the 'X'. The bar graph on the bottom of the page shows that the page is half loaded but that's where it stops. I can only shut it down by the "control - alt - delete" method.

Her wireless signal reads; Excellant.

Windows Task Manager > Networking > Adapter Name > Local Area Connection > Network Utilization = 0%; Link Speed = 10 Mbps; State = Non Operational

Windows Task Manager > Networking > Adapter Name > Wireless Network > Network Utilization = 0%; Link Speed = 11 Mbps; State = Operational

My IE works fine on my PC.
Any ideas of what I need to do to get her IE to work again.

Thank you
