I follow all the steps of plugging in cords which is the easy part but when I get to the first password, I don't know what to put there, I have tried the login password and many others. My router is almost brand new, I have tried installing it on a couple different computers and I have had it for about 8 months. I have had 2 professional computer people try to set it up but they were unable to get the computer plugged in to get internet. I don't know what password they used and I can't find out. please help me. This is a version 5 Linksys product. i can't update the firmware either. it can't detect it when I plug it in.

admin is the default password, leave user blank. If that doesn't work, reset by holding down the button on the back, it's on the left side, for about 10 sec with a pen or something similar. You can then access the setup page by using admin as the password. You will need to reconfigure it after resetting. The WRT54G v5 won't detect a firmware upgrade, at least mine doesn't. You will need to visit linksys.com and download the latest firmware, v1.01.1, and install it. Linksys has a pictorial on how to install a firmware for a v5 wrt54g.

normally the default p/w for linksys routers is admin. when it gets to the p/w screen u type in admin as the s/n and admin as the p/w. sometimes u just leave the p/w blank and it should go through. linksys offers 24/7 tech support, so i would try calling up the number that they have. another thing u could try is holding in the reset button (found on the back of the router) for 60 seconds. that should reset the router to its orginal factory default settings.

one thing that i have noticed is that even if you follow all the directions on linksys routers, u still have 2 end up calling them cuz there is always sum problem with it not working due to ip settings.

Reset your router - there's usually a place in the back or side that you can press down for about 10 seconds. This will put the router back to the original configuration. You might have to use something to insert into the reset button such as the end of a paper clip. Once reset, the password is usually nothing (empty) or admin.

The default username is blank and the default password is admin. If this does not work, there is a reset button at the back of the router (I think).

Some routers do not offer upgrades for their firmware. If you do reset the router, be sure to implement security features like WPA encryption for your wireless network and turn broadcasting off, also make use of the MAC filter security (I think) if your router offers you that feature.
