I don't really understand too much about how the internet connects to my laptop. I am able to connect my laptop to my dial up internet at home using our home user name and password. But what about when I am at University? What does wireless internet mean? Does my laptop come with it or to I have to subscribe to it to use it. And what about high speed internet access, do i also plug that into the phone lines? Sorry if this is confusing but I just recieved the lapop for christmas and I would like to know how it works... Thanks a lot! Happy holidays!!

I have a Netgear DG834 router/modem that works perfectly well at home.

I have bought the router to my parent's for Christmas and assumed I could use that to access the Internet via their ISP by just plugging it in to the phone line, picking up the WIFI signal on my Powerbook via Airport, then changing the account details to those of my parents ISP (they have a broadband DSL account also).

However, Airport is not listing the router, so presumably it is not broadcasting a signal(??), and I cannot connect to it manually via the 'Other' manual set-up option in Internet Connect. The 'i' symbol on the router is lit up so I know it is connected to the Internet OK.

I haven't bought a network cable with me so can't hard-wire into it to access the admin interface.

Any ideas? Am I being stupid?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Dear Reader,
I would like to control and limit bandwidth of Local Area Network for LAN users via Cisco Routers [IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.2(6), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)]
Is there any access list commands for limiting the assigned bandwidth for each user or NOT? if your answer is negative, please let me know if you know good software for this work too
I can install it on our NAT Server and control the assigned bandwidth for each user.

My Dad has a Linksys wireless router "B" series. I am working off his base. If he upgrades to a "G" series would I have to get a "G" series card to install or can I still use the factory installed card? What I am trying to do is get quicker downloads and try to stop the lagging my son gets when he is gaming and I am trying to download something at the same time. I forgot to mention my son also is working off my Dads wireless base station. Is this the way to go by upgrading the wireless router?

I have a 100ft run from my router and want to link another pc to the existing cable.. can i use a splitter and use both pc's off the same cable? is it possible for them to each get a seperate ip address although it uses one port on the router?

I also have a small network hub. could I connect the 100 ft cable to the uplink and then connect both pc's to the hub? Also the hub will be connected to one port in the router..

I have Silan SC92031 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter installed to my computer. I purchased BSNL 250 HOME Plan and they gave me SmartAX MT882 Router, which I connect to Ethernet Adapter installed on back of my computer through the provided cable & powered on my router. I installed drivers of Silan SC92031 and SmartAX MT882. But the problem is that, my router is'nt detected. What can be the probem?

Assume that you are responsible for the design and implementation of a LAN for a company named XYZ. Suppose that the company is composed of four buildings numbered: bldg 1, bldg 2, bldg 3, and bldg 4. The block diagram below illustrates the location of each building and the distances between them. Each building has five floors, and each floor is supposed to have up to 16 computers connected to the LAN.

I have a home office with 2 machines - a desktop and laptop. I mostly work on my desktop and data isn't shared across the 2 machines. Increasingly, I've been working from remote locations using my laptop. However, I don't like the idea of having my documents stored across 2 separate machines. I thought it would be nice to have a network hard drive that would be connected to my router, and have it accessible from remote locations so that I would always be storing my documents to that drive whether I'm at my office or off-site. Is this doable? If so, are there any articles that someone can point me to?
