I have a home office with 2 machines - a desktop and laptop. I mostly work on my desktop and data isn't shared across the 2 machines. Increasingly, I've been working from remote locations using my laptop. However, I don't like the idea of having my documents stored across 2 separate machines. I thought it would be nice to have a network hard drive that would be connected to my router, and have it accessible from remote locations so that I would always be storing my documents to that drive whether I'm at my office or off-site. Is this doable? If so, are there any articles that someone can point me to?

Sure, share a partition (or another hard drive) on the desktop. Then map that drive to the laptop. This will take care of you while working at home. If you need to access the files in the shared drive over the internet, then you either need a static ip address or a service that will keep track of what your ip address is. A service such as this is DynIp for example. Then, establish a vpn ( virtual private network ) from your laptop to the server at your house. This will allow you to 'log on' to your network remotely and it will look to your laptop like it's right there on the network. So, configured correctly, you will still be able to use the shared drive on your server just like at home. This is a fast explanation and will require some research on your part; also, compared to the FTP solutions above this one is non-trivial.

Good luck.

Hi,
I would recommend u to use a ftp like i did. Basically, i used to have a lot of work in my school's pc and there wz a problem with my usb so i setup a ftp using this software: - bulletproof ftp http://www.bpftpserver.com/

It is as easy as abc to install a bulletproof ftp server and u can connect to ur homepc/laptop very easily as long as u hav access to the internet.

Secondly, u can use remote desktop to connect to ur pc/laptop.
Here is an article about it -http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx

Hope that helps.

you want to look into Network Attached Storage (NAS). with NAS the drive has an actual MAC address, this way the drive can be assigned an IP address.

You could set it up a number of ways. Using an FTP server with NAS would be an easy way to access your work documents remotely.
