Not at all, unless you use it to dowload pirated music, movies etc...

If you use it to share LEGAL files then you are in the clear. If it were illegal then it wouldn't exist, just and it would be stripped of many of its features, just like Napster was.

EDIT: By the way, downloading illegal music turns out not to be worth it in the end anyhow, because even if you have the best virus protection, you'll always get bit in the butt by some virus that costs 600 dollars to get your computer fixed. Ironically, cheaper to pay .99 cents per song on sites such as itunes.

Downloading Limewire is not illegal. However, I'm pretty sure distributing (as well as downloading) the material that goes on Limewire is. You'd have to read the information the RIA puts up.

No Limewire itself is legal - its how you use it that can be illegal - its like driving a car isnt illegal, but speeding or driving dangerously or mowing someone down is illegal.

So if you use limewire to share open source software, or share documents/files thats you created then its 100% legal. Thats why all the big corporations like the music industry cant do much about it they cant close down people who write software such as bittorrent/limewire etc but they can target individual people if they catch them sharing copyright songs etc

Using any software to access or share copyrighted material without the consent of the copyright owner is illegal. Any other use is legal.

The chances of getting caught are currently fairly small, but the fines and civil damages are breathtakingly high.

It's your finances and your freedom. You dedide if it's worth the risk.

Well downloading Limewire isn't. If you use it in another way like downloading unsafe programmes, you could get caught. Limewire contains Adware. This means that Limewire have all of your details like name, address, telephone number and maybe even bank details.

Downloading the software itself is not; downloading or uploading copyrighted material may be, depending on your country's sanity.

It's fine in Canada, for example.
