If you have a network set up you can map each laptop to the PC that the external drive is connected to and all can use the external hard drive equally.

To set up a network is another subject if you don't have one set up then you will need to install the hard drive in one laptop and connect the laptops together to share the drive.

Basically, it's just a normal Cat5 cable with the send and receive reversed.
Plug one end into each computer...much, much faster than serial. You'll need to set up the normal network protocols in each laptop and designate a workgroup as you would with a router or hub.
You can user
1. cross over LAN cable
2. USB-USB data cable
3. Serial cable

You can, but you need some kind of controller between the laptops and the hard drive.

You could even hook it up to one laptop and share the drive on your personal network using a hub. The bad part is the laptop with the direct connection to the drive would need to be on.

I have an older Pentium III machine that is use to control my network. My DSL Modem is connected to it, as are my printers and shared resources. The machine also has my firewall to the outside world. The rest of the machines are connected to this Linux box. The box has been up for two years with no own time.

yep...both have to have the same Operating system (or file system at least) then you simply run the set-up and make sure you make the volume name the same....

you can even make separate volumes on the same drive to be only accessed by a certain machine, but it doesn't seem like you wish to do this.

you just have to connect the usb to the machine you want to use...They may have a controller so you can use them in synch...but that would be silly with laptops

simply follow the install instructions for the drive on each machine. rather simple

Yes, but not simultaneously. Unless both are part of an Ethernet network
