Computer Networking - December 2006

[Selected]: All categories Computers & Internet Computer Networking

So, when I currently have a laptop, recently did a system restore. However, I have a network drive that I backed a few files onto in order to retrieve them later. However, I cannot connect to the network drive or the workgroup, for that matter. I'm positive it is not the connection or the network drive is down because all other computers in the household are able to connect successfully. Whenever I attempt to connect to the workgroup, I get the error message of "Workgroup is not accessible, You might not have permission to use this network resource." My subnet mask and gateway are all the same on the other desktops.

I tried connecting the laptop on both a wired and a wireless network connection, but to no avail. I still get the same error, which leads me to believe it might be a computer setting, perhaps? Or it could just be the router that I am connecting to is blocking this certain mac address from connecting.

I only have a single Ethernet connection in my office but I have two desktop systems, each with a 10/100 network card, that I need to be connected. Can two systems share the same network port and if so what do I need in terms of hardware to make the connection?

And can you steal it from yourself? I am not trying to be funny or silly at all. If you have a computer and you get cable internet hooked up and later you buy a second computer...do you need some type of router and adapter to have internet access on the second computer or just an adapter? If you use just the adapter are you getting the internet connection from your own computer or is it coming from another source? I want to be clear about this because I am really confused.

Am I making any sense?

I have a home network. The router has port forwarding, which you set by setting which IP address the ports are forwarded to. But as the computers come and go and are restarted, the router keeps assigning them different addresses, leading to the ports forwarding to different machines all the time, which I'm constantly manually correcting. I've tried setting up the computers with manual IP settings, or using DHCP with a manual IP address, but neither one will work- they only work when configured to use DHCP, and then the addresses keep changing. An old router I had let you reserve an IP address and always assign it to the same MAC address, so the same machine always had a static local IP, but my Linksys Wireless router doesn't appear to offer that. Any idea?

I have a problem with ICS in XP.

I have a host computer with 2 network cards, one that connects to a cable modem(the internet) and one that connects directly to another computer. I've tried to enable internet connection sharing on the computer that connects to the internet, and I failed.

The thing is that the network is working, as I can share files both ways. I can ping the client from the server computer, but I can't ping from the client to the server(but file transfer works both ways).

What's the problem?

I've tried disabling the firewall , but I just can't ping the server computer from the client computer.

What do you think?

Thanks.

I'm up at a minesite and in my hotel room some guy has a wireless router upstairs. It's unsecured/open, but it said "PleasePay$BeforeConnectionRm208". I tried connecting before paying but it wouldn't let me. So I go up to room 208 and this guy is like "yeah it's $10 a week" and then he tells me he needs my IP's from start > run > ipconfig/all. He said he needed my wireless IP too.

So I give hiim $20 and give him my IP's and he is like "ok it should be working in 60 seconds". And it does. I'm assuming it's just a program he is using to control flow of traffic to his network. I wondered why he didn't use a secure network and just give out the password, but then I realized that people would just give out the password and stuff and share it. So he is doing it this way.

It just seems fishy though. I've got Zone Alarm on my computer and I use all secure transactions for pertinant information. It just freaks me out maybe he is reading my emails I type or my MSN messages. Could that be??
