i got the ethernet cable running from my xbox to my laptop, it's recognising it's all plugged in but when i try and set it up it keeps failng it ip adress test. i got no router, gateway(?), modem, i think the way i've hooked these two together is 'ad-hoc' because it's saying something about there not being a dhcp(???) server. any tips? please?

I had a program before that I downloaded from Microsofts website it allowed me to "control" my windows 2003 Server from my pc (ie add users, and other functions) as if I were sitting at the server. I cannot remember the name of it? Also it allowed me to add snap-ins and all but I upgraded my PC and when I clicked on the Icon it told me the program was missing. Thank you.
