I have broadband internet but i wouldnt know where to start with routers, cards, addaptors or access points etc. all i want to do is be able to use my laptop anywhere in the house. Can someone help me?

you need to install a wireless router, and syncronise your laptop woth it. laptops usually need a wireless device plugging in, but some have wifi and such. it's the wireless adaptor built in.

Ok. You have been given a lot of great advice from the replies that I have read.
As I don't know what your operating system is I will give the the long version so not to cause problems.
1. Check your laptop for a wireless card. (Right click my computer and select properties, then hardware then device manager. Look under network adaptors and see if you have a wireless card).
Assuming you have a card goto 3 if not goto 2.
2. If you don't see a card pressent then check to see if you have a PCMICA card adaptor, this is for your wireless adaptor. If you have a slot then you can buy one from a good retailer.
3. Now that the laptop is sorted we can look to get the router sorted. You should try and get one that has good support should things fail. I have found that Linksys is the best as they have 24hour support. Select one that is in your price range, however don't go too cheep as this can cause problems later should you wish to upgrade or require faster transfer rates. You should look for a router that will give at least 54MBit transfer rate with WPA as its encryption. This is the minimum that I would use.
4. Once you have your router, ensure that your laptop is fully service packed from windows update, it should be Service pack 2. This will allow you to use WPA or higher. To do this you have to wire it to the modem.
5. Once you are ready then you can start the process. Follow the instructions in the book ensure you write down the WPA key or phrase as this is code you need, however, most laptop cards only accept the key so have this available as it makes life easier.
This should now let you use the wireless safe and trouble free.

You just need to buy a router--that is the only way to have wireless internet (other than a card, which would be expensive). A router can be bought for about 40 bucks. There is no ongoing expense or anything. you just need to install the CD and follow the instructions. basically it is taking your cable modem, and rerouting it through itself so it will send out a wireless signal.
the best part is, the internet is faster with the router.

ok, make sure your broadband is wireless(the box which ur phoneline goes into must have a small aerial) if it has then buy a wireless usb adp stick and plug it into the ethernet card on ur laptop or maybe u already have a wireless card in the lap top then there no need . just make sure ur box has an aerial
after that u'll be able to connect anywhere around the house

you need to have a wireless router, and put in a wireless card into your laptop. A PCMCIA type of card for the laptop would be best. Linksys, Netgear, Belkin all make good wireless routers.

Well if ure router is a wireless one then only you will be able to have a wireless connection. And its possible, well you can buy a wireless adapter thing, its like a usb drive which you have to plug it in the usb then you will be able to have wirless connection, im not sure what speed you will get by this but you can always try.

your laptop has to have a wireless card in it first. either built in or plug in. then you can go to the store, computer, radio shack, walmart, or any electronics store. they should have a wireless router box. it looks kinda like a cable box with a bunch of little lights on it. then call the support number on the instructions and they will help you do it. there is also websites that will help you with it included in the directions. they are usually step by step and easy to follow. if all else fails then i am positive one of the answers you get with the question will explain it.

You need a wireless router. Most new laptops will be ready for wireless although if not you can buy an adapter thing which you can plug into your laptop

Buy a Lynksys wireless router, they are the best. I have had mine for over 2 years and I have never had any problems. The Customer service is also good and very helpful, they also have a live chat if you don't want to phone them. www.lynksys.com
You will not regret buying one. Oh by the way I am now way inconnection with Lynksys sales or their company.

the first thing i would do is get a wirless adaptor and run home with it and see if a nebor has an "unsecured wirless network" this means that he didnt put a password (that'll drop 40$ off you monthly bills!) if he or she does then you dont need your internet connection anymore you'll just steal from your neabors but if your nebors dont run back to the computer store and get a wireless wrouter ( i sugesst linksys it was easy to set up) and put a password so noone can steal your connection and vala depending on where you live (building density) you can get a good 1000 yards

you have to have wireless router which you can buy in a store like bestbuy next you have to an internet card which goes into you computer not in the part where you put cd there should be another slot and of course you have to have a modem and thats it
