We have one and to be honest it's just like any other router. It has additional ports so a telephone can plug directly into it, but for me the useful feature is being able to connect a Voice over IP (VoIP) phone straight to it.
Otherwise, it's a bit of a 'gimmick' and does what all other routers do.

The Home Hub is designed for people who just want to browse the internet with one or more home computers networked together. If that is all you need, then I can defintely recommend it, especially as it is free with some of BT's deals.
I had some trouble installing mine, but it has worked very well ever since - I am using it right now to write this. I found out that the trouble was not due to the Home Hub, but caused by my Norton Internet Security 2005 firewall, which was misbehaving - it has a bug in it.
