So, when I currently have a laptop, recently did a system restore. However, I have a network drive that I backed a few files onto in order to retrieve them later. However, I cannot connect to the network drive or the workgroup, for that matter. I'm positive it is not the connection or the network drive is down because all other computers in the household are able to connect successfully. Whenever I attempt to connect to the workgroup, I get the error message of "Workgroup is not accessible, You might not have permission to use this network resource." My subnet mask and gateway are all the same on the other desktops.

I tried connecting the laptop on both a wired and a wireless network connection, but to no avail. I still get the same error, which leads me to believe it might be a computer setting, perhaps? Or it could just be the router that I am connecting to is blocking this certain mac address from connecting.

Run the Network Setup Wizard, and follow the steps again. Make sure you have the same workgroup name and a unique computer name. Also check the firewall settings.

This happens alot if you re-install or repair your system using the same computer name. The authentication data associated with the same computer name is different now , and the entire workgroup needs a reboot to honor you again. You could just change the name of your computer and re-join the workgroup to make it easy on everyone...

If your computer is XP PRO and there is a mix of XP PRO, XP Home and W2k on the workgroup, then go to your local security policy under security options and make sure the following 2 rules are DISABLED

Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts.

Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares.

You can also avoid the workgroup altogether and just map the share using the IP address of the computer sharing the files and the name of the share. Use the tools menu in MY Computer.

example X:
\\192.168.0.5\ShareName
