Is it possible for me just to go out and purchase a Cable Modem (at Wal-Mart or wherever) and hock it up to my cable at home and then would I be able to have access to the internet through that way?

No - you need to subscribe to cable Internet through your cable provider. They'll sell you a cable modem or you can buy one elsewhere, but unless you know what you're doing you should just take whatever one they sell you because you know it will work.

You can purchase your own Cable Modem however, your modem has an ID and the your cable provider must allow it to talk to their network. So, no you cannot just hook it up you have to call your cable company too.

First you want to make sure you get the right modem for your computer then you call isp your provider and give them the numbers these are labled on the back of the modem.
Check with your provider on your pricing for being hooked up , I req: Comcast cable with your modem.
