And can you steal it from yourself? I am not trying to be funny or silly at all. If you have a computer and you get cable internet hooked up and later you buy a second computer...do you need some type of router and adapter to have internet access on the second computer or just an adapter? If you use just the adapter are you getting the internet connection from your own computer or is it coming from another source? I want to be clear about this because I am really confused.

Am I making any sense?

I DEFINITELY do NOT want to steal anything. I have internet already (high speed cable connection through Comcast) and a Wireless-G broadband router, the WRT54G v 5. Then I have the USB Network adapter and do not know if I am supposed to have both of them to make the second computer have internet access. This is where my confusion comes in. Is it neccesary to have both because I saw a question where a girl said she hooked up just the adapter and her second computer has internet just fine without the router. So, is her computer getting the internet access from her OWN computer without using the router or is she getting internet on her second computer from an outside source?

If you have multiple computers, you would get a router or wireless router if you have a laptop. There is no stealing of your own internet, just sharing it on multiple systems. I would recommend Linksys WRT54G or equivelant. Its cheap and very easy to setup. Follow the video instructions on how to setup your router and share your connections. All a router does is take your given IP address from your internet company and gives you internal ip's to use on one network. So each computer would be example: 192.168.0.101, 192.168.0.102, etc. 101 can be your main computer attached to the router, 102 can be your laptop connected. In order for you to connect, you just have to have the password you specify. Make sure you do use encryption, otherwise anyone can use your own internet and make the connection eventually really slow.

The same goes for your neighbors, if they have a wireless network setup with no authentication, you can just connect to them and use their internet, you yourself would have to have a wi-fi card, but that IS stealing and is very wrong!

If you have additional questions problems, re-submit.

No, you can't steal from yourself.

Yes, you do need a wireless adapter if your pc does not have built-in wireless AND a wireless router. The wireless adapter is connecting to the wireless part of the router; in turn the router is directly connected to the cable modem. The "internet" or the signal is passed like this: cable modem ->router -> all computers connected to the router, whether wireless or wired.

If someone is getting internet access wirelessly WITHOUT having a router, that person is most likely STEALING someone else's internet access.

I have a laptop with Wi-Fi capability. I love the fact that I don't deal with the cable company. I just find/research areas with Wi-Fi and hook up. You may have to have a password at some places. Other places, you hook up for free.
If you hookup through a dedicated connection with wireless router, that would be stealing a connection. But, usually someone will know when you are on their connection. Then, most people encrypt their wireless with passwords. When I can't do Wi-Fi, I have a Verizon wireless pc card with broadband access.

Using dsl or cable internet connection it's best to use a router to connect two or more computers. You can steal a wireless connection when you have a wireless adapter on a computer or laptop and tap into someone else open wireless connection. To secure your wireless connection you should use wep key setting and disable broadcasting your ssid id.
