MAC filtering is, without a doubt, the most effective security tool available to you. Each of your PCs, desktops or laptops, have a MAC address and by limiting your router to connecting only those addresses corresponding to your equipment you should effectively block hackers. Here's an article explaining the method of finding the MAC address for each computer in your house:

While I agree with the previous poster about the ease of hacking into a wireless connection, I still believe MAC filtering to be superior to WEP. WPA2 is likely the best method but not supported by all routers.
Another solution is to use a VPN like JiWire HotSpot helper. It's inexpensive and far more reliable than any other method of wireless security.

Look on the management page for your router. Look for a page that lists all connected machines. Read your docs, it will tell you exactly where to look. It will only show you the MAC address and maybe the IP address of anyone connected to your router. There's no way to figure out exactly where they are or who they are.
If someone is regularly "hacking" your encryption you probably are using one of the pre-configured WEP keys in your router. Those are all well-known and simple to bypass. Set your own random key and make sure that WEP is set for 128 bits. Better yet, if your router supports WPA with pre-shared keys (sometimes called WPA-2) use that as it is un-crackable.
Someone is likely to post instructions to enable MAC filtering. Don't waste your time with that. Anyone with the expertise to crack a WEP key can walk right past MAC filtering; it actually takes much less skill to bypass MAC filtering -- you could learn how to do it in 2 minutes or less.

You'd have to catch them in the act of actually using your wireless, and that's virtually impossible. Just make sure you have your wireless security set up right and you will keep them out. I, too, have cable broadband, and used it for nearly a year until I found someone had moved into a nearby apartment and was piggybacking on my signal. I suddenly changed the channel and encrypted it, and the signal theft stopped. Bet they got a big surprise! Call your router manufacturer, they will help with this.

You did no longer say regardless of if that is instantaneous or no longer. Latching on on your instantaneous sign is especially uncomplicated till like others have pronounced you have initiated WEP or different instantaneous Encryption schemes. first element you're able to do instantaneous or no longer is positioned a password on the router and modem. in case you have instantaneous enable instantaneous risk-free practices you additionally can basically block his MAC handle in the Mac clear out placing of your router look on the MAC handle of the computers connecting evaluate them on your computers and block something that may no longer yours. turn off DHCP on the router and setup static IPs on your laptop's you additionally can call your ISP and Haber them "marry" the modem on your mac handle in case your router (that is a soreness because of the fact in case you ever could replace routers you the two could call your isp or spoof the mac handle in the router)

You need to change it to a secured wireless network, you may have to dial into the modem to do so. Tech support is easy for this but I can probably get you into. First of all look on the bottom of your router for its IP address, put that addy into the address bar in IE and hit enter. You get a page taking you into the firmware on your router. Check the security section, if you need a user name and password it is usually admin, and admin. If you can't get in call tech support, there is usually a phone number for them on each screen and they will walk you through securing it, its basically just giving it a user name and password. Make sure you do it for everyone or every pc in your house.
